Kristin Davis recalls being told by a producer, “Don’t gain any weight,” while filming for Melrose Place.
In a recent cover story for People, the actress looked back at her time on the hit soap opera, on which she played Brooke Armstrong. And while she has positive memories of her co-stars, she admitted that “there was a general vibe on the set though, that was difficult, about the thinness situation.”
Seeing “every single person was gorgeous and super skinny,” Davis felt like she needed to do something, so she hired a running coach and would partake in back-to-back 90-minute spin classes.

“I was frustrated. I was trying to do the thing,” she explained. “Of course, I’m sure I wasn’t eating, I have no idea. I don’t remember the eating part.”
The Sex and the City alum recalled pushing herself so hard that she even “fainted in a parking lot one time” and sometimes “couldn’t remember my name.”
Despite everything Davis was doing, the actress said she learned from her Melrose Place costar Thomas Calabro that producers still had concerns about her weight.
“He’s like, ‘Kristin, I’m so happy to see you here. I just wanna tell you, you know, I think you look great,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, thank you. What are you talking about? What do you mean?'” she recounted of their conversation. “He said, ‘Oh, I know that the producers are really stressed, you know, but I just think it’s amazing that we have a woman who has curves.'”
While Davis said she was clearly confused, she said Calabro added, “‘I just think they shouldn’t, you know, put too much pressure on you.’ And I’m like, ‘What?'”
That’s when the And Just Like That actress decided to confront producers. “I go to the line producer and I’m like, ‘Thomas Calabro just told me that you guys are stressing about my weight. Did someone say something? Did [exec producer] Mr. [Aaron] Spelling say something?'” Davis recalled. “And he was like, ‘We think you look beautiful,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, and?’ He goes, ‘Just don’t gain any weight.'”
Davis added that these interactions and behavior on set “was normal for a long time,” adding, “There was a lot of stress. If you had hips, it was a situation.”
Melrose Place, which ran from 1992 to 1999, centered around a group of friends living in Melrose Place, California.
