📢⏱️ Registrations for #BioMonWeek2026 are opening in early February! Join us in Montpellier, France, from 4 to 8 May 2026 for the first Biodiversity Monitoring Week, the European conference dedicated to advancing biodiversity monitoring. The conference will revolve around 9 themes: 🔹 Terrestrial monitoring 🔹 Marine monitoring 🔹 Freshwater monitoring 🔹 Data management and infrastructures for monitoring 🔹 Mass monitoring 🔹 Public policy and funding for monitoring 🔹 Monitoring governance 🔹 Monitoring and the private sector 🔹 Capacity-building in monitoring Co-organised by Biodiversa+ GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility, MARCO-BOLO BioAgora Project and Alliance for Nature this event will bring together science, policy and business communities to exchange monitoring knowledge, build networks and drive tangible societal impact to help reverse the global biodiversity crisis. ℹ️ www.biomonweek.eu #BioMonWeek2026 #BiodiversityMonitoring #BiodiversityData #BiodiversityWeek #BusinessForNature #EUEnvironment #Science4Biodiversity

About us
GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international open data infrastructure, funded by governments. It allows anyone, anywhere to access data about all types of life on Earth, shared across national boundaries via the Internet. By encouraging and helping institutions to publish data according to common standards, GBIF enables research not possible before, and informs better decisions to conserve and sustainably use the biological resources of the planet. GBIF operates through a network of nodes, coordinating the biodiversity information facilities of Participant countries and organizations, collaborating with each other and the Secretariat to share skills, experiences and technical capacity. GBIF's vision: "A world in which biodiversity information is freely and universally available for science, society and a sustainable future."

Biodiversity data is not just about numbers or databases. It is about making nature visible in decision-making. Under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, countries are working to ensure that biodiversity information is not locked away in reports or systems, but is accessible, comparable and usable across sectors and borders. When data can be shared and understood, it becomes possible to track progress, identify gaps, and adjust action where it is most needed. Making biodiversity data available is therefore a collective effort — linking national monitoring systems with global platforms, scientific expertise and policy-relevant tools. This shared data ecosystem helps turn local observations into global insight, and evidence into action for people and nature. This post highlights a few organisations as examples of those already helping to make biodiversity data more available, accessible and usable at global level, including GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility, GRIIS, GEO BON, IUCN, and OECD - OCDE. #KMGBF #Target21 #KMGBFInAction #UNBiodiversity #ForNature #KnowledgeManagement #IndigenousKnowledge #OpenData #BiodiversityScience #GlobalAction

🐦 #CitizenScience supports improved invasive species detection Widespread biodiversity monitoring through platforms like #eBird and iNaturalist.org is helping spot 🔎invasive alien species earlier than official records. A recent study compared 200M+ citizen science records accessed via GBIF with official data from 30 European countries (2010–2021) found that 50% of invasions were detected earlier or in the same year by citizen science. Species that were highly recorded on citizen platforms (especially vertebrates) were detected much earlier, highlighting the power of public participation. While EU legislative priorities still drive some faster official reporting, integrating citizen science data into management remains a key challenge. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eGMdwikZ #DataUse #ResearchImpact
