Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

Bhutan, a land of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is welcoming a growing Wikimedia community. 🇧🇹 Dzongkha, the country’s official language, is spoken by the majority of the population, and while Dzongkha Wikipedia started more than 10 years ago, the community recognizes a need for new, sustainable ideas and voices. Dzongkha Wikipedian Kheng Singye Dorji reached out to the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group for advice on helping to build a more active community. Along with Bengal Wikimedians Ananya Mondal and User:Bodhisattwa, Dorji held two workshops where volunteers discussed ways to build community and support the digital preservation of Bhutan’s culture, language, and heritage. The workshops also spotlighted innovative projects that highlight Bhutan’s unique natural wonders, including Wiki Loves Butterfly, a digital conservation effort that has contributed around 15,000 high-quality images to Wikimedia Commons. Learn why this collaborative effort is a significant step in fostering the Dzongkha Wikipedia community ➡️ https://w.wiki/D92Y

What do these three faces have in common? They are the faces of three generous volunteers who help make Wikipedia whole – Carol M (User:Cmwaura), from Kenya; Abigaïl Agbenomba (User:Aimeabibis), from Benin; and Goodness Ignatius (User:Olugold), from Nigeria. Combined, these three women have made over 28,000 edits to Wikimedia projects. Besides editing Wikipedia, they have also fact checked content, added citations, translated articles, and overall helped make the information you read on the free encyclopedia reliable and verifiable. This International Women’s Day, we are celebrating volunteers whose contributions about notable women have improved the scope, breadth, and reliability of Wikipedia. Get to know who are some of the humans behind the content, and see how these women editors from Africa prove that #KnowledgeIsHuman Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eJ_sATHK

It is time for Wiki Loves Folklore 2025! The global photography contest celebrating folk traditions and cultural heritage is back for one more year. Since its launch, Wiki Loves Folklore has collected more than 120,000 stunning media from over 168 countries, contributing invaluable visual resources to Wikimedia projects – including the photo in this post, featuring an initiation ritual of boys from the Yao tribe in Malawi. Writers can take part in the Feminism and Folklore contest to showcase the important roles women hold in folklore. With participation from 51 Wikipedia language communities, it has become one of the most widely organized Wikipedia contests to date. From Edmonton, Canada, to Assam, India, a small idea sparked big change 🌏🍁 When Joli Rumi, an Assamese Wikimedian thousands of miles from home, noticed a challenge – too few active contributors in that community – she had an idea to create a mentorship program. WikiSanjog is a program connecting experienced Assamese Wikimedians with newcomers eager to contribute. Over three months, 18 mentors guided 58 mentees, leading to almost 20,000 edits, 200+ new Wikipedia articles, and a thriving community passionate about preserving Assamese language and heritage. The journey culminated in the First Assamese WikiSanjog Conference, where mentors and mentees met to celebrate their impact. But this is just the beginning: WikiSanjog has inspired an ongoing mentorship model, ensuring that new editors always have guidance. Discover how mentoring can grow communities and keep languages thriving on Wikimedia ➡️ https://w.wiki/D7bg

From a quiet Scottish railway stop built in 1887 to a milestone in modern internet history – Jordanhill railway station’s story is one for the books. On 1 March 2006, it became the subject of English Wikipedia's one millionth article, highlighting the free encyclopedia's growing reach. The article was created by Ewan Macdonald, a Wikipedian known on the site as User:Nach0King. The small station itself continues to serve passengers on the Argyle and North Clyde lines. Located nearby is the Jordanhill Campus of the University of Strathclyde. The playing field for the rugby union team Glasgow Hawks RFC is also close to the station. Postcards have sparked an unexpected connection between Bolivia and Mangaluru, India. After Wikimania 2024, Carla (User:Carlillasa) returned to Bolivia with more than memories – she brought postcards from a contest she had never heard of: Wiki Loves Mangaluru. Curious, she discovered its striking similarity to Wikimixtura, Bolivia’s own cultural photography contest. Both initiatives document underrepresented traditions, from Bolivian crafts and dances to Mangaluru’s festivals and cuisine. This shared passion led to a unique collaboration. Carla invited Santhosh Notagar, Wiki Loves Mangaluru’s coordinator, to help judge Wikimixtura’s latest edition on Bolivian crafts. The experience fostered cultural exchange beyond photos – revealing parallels in art, heritage, and community values. Now, the Bolivian and Mangaluru Wikimedia groups are planning future projects that bridge cultures through Wikimedia, celebrating the rich traditions that shape our world.
