Hi John Mueller. I am curious about your take on something and am hoping this sparks a larger conversation. A publisher creates an article depicting a video or embed (like a map for example) and the headline mentions that a user would expect to see the video or embed, however the website uses AMP and AMP strips out the video or embed from the page. How might this be considered in terms of some of the policies? For example, the Google News and Discover Misleading content policy: "We don't allow preview content that misleads users to engage with it by promising details which aren't reflected in the underlying content." The content does not intend to mislead but the technical parameters around AMP result in key pieces of content being removed for the AMP experience. Thanks!

For those of you following me. I have been talking about this for quite a while. AI agents will be connecting to software services provided by third party providers. Instead of accessing Salesforce through the Salesforce app or an ABM platform via their app your trained agent will access the data and display it within an AI generated custom UI. It will monitor performance, set alerts and execute improvements via these services. The consolidation that I have been predicting is not a function of Martech and sales tech acquisitions. It’s going to be data consolidation and the migration of bespoke apps to unified UI with programmatic access to data services from legacy apps. The future is here. Plan accordingly.

There's lots of data showing that "unsafe" inventory on premium publishers outperforms outcome/lift benchmarks. Is there any way to buy/target this inventory specifically? Tangentially does anyone help publishers donate "unsafe" inventory and claim a deduction? I work with a great get out the vote nonprofit that could make use of a bunch of free/low-cost inventory adjacent to election coverage.

I recently rebuilt my Fierce Performance Marketing LLC website with an AI assistant. The process was easy, and the output was much better than anticipated. TechCrunch covered the emerging market of #AIcodeassistant startups. It noted a Gartner survey that found over half of enterprise organizations are currently piloting or leveraging AI code assistants. It will be interesting to watch the integration of AI into traditional #developer service models and its potential impacts on agencies. Thoughts?

Is AI going to steal your job? If you’re a dev marketer, probably not. For all the econ nerds out there, it has a lot to do with the Baumol effect. What do I mean by that? At its simplest, marketing isn’t manufacturing. Sure, AI tools that help you write ad copy or even spit out pictures and videos might mean more output with a lot fewer inputs. But here’s the catch: without human touch, those outputs lack quality. As I’ve learned building both ScraperAPI and TLDR, devs in particular really need to feel a sense of trust before they bother with your product. I’ve seen firsthand how hard ads and messaging can flop when there isn’t human emotion or knowledge feeding it from the other side (which is exactly why we hire tech experts to curate our newsletters). Marketing is a lot more like the education and arts sectors in that way — it can’t function well without skilled humans. And the stakes here are only getting higher… Anything that AI can automate is just going to become table stakes. The real value will come from all the things AI CAN’T do, raising the importance of retaining and finding marketers who can really tap into their human side, not just crank on ChatGPT all day. tl;dr: AI is great for automating the tedious tasks, but it will never replace the human touch needed to build trust with the ever-skeptical developer audience.

The marketing measurement industry has changed a lot over the last five years. When we started Recast, there weren’t any good open-source packages or tools for doing media mix modeling. There has been a lot of work in the open-source sphere around creating these libraries for doing media mix modeling. But I think the results of that are a little mixed: I think a really positive change in the industry is that people are talking a lot more about incrementality – media mix modeling is one of those tools and I love to see its adoption is more common. There are a lot of smart people working on really hard problems and contributing with different ways of approaching MMM to see what works and what doesn’t. We love to see that! That said, I think one of the problems is that some people see these open-source tools and they think that media mix modeling is easy – you just “take the data, you plug it into an open-source tool and get results on the other side.” The problem is that open-source tools don’t really deal with the hard problems around validation, which is one of the hardest challenges in MMM. Without it, how do you know if you got the right results? What will happen if you change your marketing mix based on them and you’re misled into burning millions of dollars… all because the results from the model were wrong? That's a real problem. And then the same thing happens with some vendors in the space who got started by building on top of the open-sourced tools. We saw a lot of them close down quickly because MMM is much harder than it looks from the outside – especially if you’re just using a fundamentally flawed tool as your foundation. A lot of what we're seeing in the industry right now is people coming to terms with that fact. I think that that's where the next evolution of this space is going to be: people getting really serious about validation and doing effective causal inference. That will be a huge step for the industry and will actually create value for marketers and businesses that are trying to use media mix models to grow their businesses.
