Seven tips for safer riding from IAM RoadSmart: How many of these are you already doing?

As the UK’s largest road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart have been helping make roads safer since 1956 through expert coaching and lifelong learning.

With a national network of over 68,000 members and 160 local groups, they support post-licence drivers and riders with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to stay safe on the road. Whether you ride for fun, commute daily, or tour the country, their aim is to help you enjoy your time on the road, with greater awareness and control.

IAM RoadSmart’s Regional Road Safety Manager, Stewart Mackie, shares his expert riding advice. A retired police officer, Stewart worked in all areas of the force and finished his career as superintendent for Road Policing in Scotland. He holds a Class 1 motorcycle qualification and has been riding motorbikes for 26 years. He owns a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro.

1. Vision is everything on corners

Good road positioning gives better visibility through bends. Watch the vanishing points, if it moves away – the bend opens, if it comes toward you – it’s tightening. Be cautious on entry and accelerate only once you can see the exit is clear. Aim to be around 18 inches from the edge on right-handers, or from the centre line on left-handers (when safe). Always account for your motorbike’s width.

2. Brush up on your overtakes

Overtakes can be high risk, so planning is everything. Always check your mirrors and don’t assume no one’s overtaking you. Look well beyond your overtaking gap for potholes or hazards. If the vehicle you’re passing suddenly swerves or slows, it could catch you out. A good overtake is smooth, confident, and well-prepared.

3. Be considerate with your pillion

Carrying a pillion affects your motorbike’s handling, braking, and acceleration. Ride smoothly and predictably. Without an intercom, agree on simple hand signals so your passenger can alert you to issues like discomfort or distraction. Check your manual for suspension settings for two-up riding.

4. Beware of the U-turning tourist

Tourists can be unpredictable, especially near brown attraction signs or roadside car parks. They may brake suddenly, turn late, or simply not be paying attention. I live in a beautiful area of Scotland so I’m always cautious of tourist traffic, so I ease off the throttle in these areas and expect last-minute manoeuvres.

5. You’re nothing without planning

Poor planning leads to stress, which can lead to mistakes. Know your route, set realistic daily mileage, and allow time for stops or delays. Fatigue is a major factor in incidents. Listen to your body, and don’t ride past your limits, especially near the end of the day.

6. Squeeze me smoothly

Use progressive braking and the correct gear to stay in control. The rear brake is especially useful at low speeds, and if you have a pillion remember to consider the extra weight. And check your brake pads regularly, on a heavy touring bike with a pillion and luggage, you may wear through the pads faster than you expect.

7. Dress for success

Uncomfortable kit can quickly become a distraction. Stop to adjust vents or layers and carry visor cleaner for bugs and grime. Pack lightweight waterproofs that fit over your gear and choose bright colours to stay visible in poor light or bad weather.
