Athletics trade speedy outfielder Esteury Ruiz to Dodgers for minor league pitcher

Ruiz, who led the American League with 67 stolen bases in 2023 for an AL rookie record, was designated for assignment by the A’s on Sunday. He is headed to join Triple-A Oklahoma City.

11hGuardians 2B prospect Juan Brito went 2-for-4 with a stolen base for Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.

Brito lost the second base job to Gabriel Arias in the spring, but has gotten off to a good start in Triple-A, going 7-for-20 with one steal, three RBI, three strikeouts, and one walk. Gabriel Arias has also gotten off to a strong start for the Guardians, going 6-for-19 with one home run and two RBI in six games, so there is no change in the works.

1dBen Lively allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Padres.

Lively fired two scoreless frames to open the contest before the wheels came off during a four-run implosion in the third inning when he gave up four straight hits, including a two-run blast to Padres star Jackson Merrill. He finished with four strikeouts and also issued a pair of walks. He’ll aim to turn things around on Wednesday when he faces the rebuilding Athletics in a favorable home matchup.

1dBrayan Rocchio is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s tilt against the Padres.

It’ll be the first day off of the year for Rocchio. The 24-year-old slick-field shortstop will get the day off with Gabriel Arias handling his duties and hitting eighth.

1dLogan Allen allowed four runs with one strikeout over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres on Tuesday.

Allen dodged trouble early on, stranding five baserunners with the help of three ground ball double plays. But he could only get by for so long without missing any bats. Jackson Merrill took him deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning to put the Padres on the board. Two more runs would score on a walk and two hits in the fifth. Allen struck out his first batter to start the sixth and walked two more before his day was done. The 26-year-old left-hander lines up for a start against the White Sox in Cleveland next Tuesday.

2dJosé Ramírez went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in a loss Monday to the Padres.

Ramírez was removed Saturday with a wrist sprain and didn’t play Sunday, but he looked healthy on a solo blast that traveled 365 feet in the first inning. The 32-year-old also doubled, and that two-bagger had an exit velocity of 108.2 mph. Ramírez remains one of the true fantasy superstars in the sport.

2dLuis Ortiz gave up seven runs while working 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Padres on Monday.

While Ortiz didn’t allow a homer, he was consistently in trouble. The 26-year-old allowed nine hits and four walks, and wasn’t able to escape jams; with most of the damage coming in a four-run second. Ortiz also struggled over the Cactus League, so it’s fair to say that he’s not at his best right now. He’ll get a chance to change that Sunday against a not-so-great Angels’ lineup in Anaheim.

CLE Third Baseman #11

3dJosé Ramírez (wrist) is in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Padres.

Ramírez is back at the hot corner and batting second on Monday night at Petco Park following a brief one-game absence due to a right wrist sprain. The 32-year-old fantasy superstar appears to have avoided serious injury, which is a massive relief for the Guardians and fantasy managers alike.

4dKyle Manzardo went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in leading the Guardians past the Royals 6-2 on Sunday.

Like his first homer Thursday, this was off a lefty in Sam Long. Incredibly, Manzardo’s six plate appearances against lefties this season have produced four extra-base hits and a walk. As a rookie last year, he made just three starts and had a total of 20 plate appearances versus left-handers. We don’t want to overreact, but it’s a very encouraging start; that he’s now playing every day and hitting third against right-handers would seem to give him some mixed-league value.

Tanner Bibee

CLE Starting Pitcher #28

4dTanner Bibee allowed two hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday versus the Royals.

Bibee was scratched from his Opening Day start because of food poisoning, but he was fine today, even if he did settle for two strikeouts. He did give up a shot to Vinnie Pasquantino in the first that would have been a homer in 24 parks, though not in Kansas City. Right fielder Nolan Jones had it go off his glove as he crashed into the wall and then nearly fell down because the Royals’ bullpen door popped open. It went as a triple. Bibee’s next start is due to come in Anaheim.

Daniel Schneemann

CLE Second Baseman #10

4dDaniel Schneeman hit his first homer and drew three walks against the Royals on Sunday.

Only one of Schneeman and Gabriel Arias would have played today had José Ramírez been healthy, but both ended up coming through nicely, with Arias going 2-for-3 with a homer. Schneeman got off to a great start in his major league career last June, but he quickly faded, hitting .192/.271/.325 in his final 62 games and then going 0-for-7 in the postseason. He was iffy to make the Guardians this spring, and he didn’t exactly force them to carry him with his .209/.277/.442 Cactus League line. If he hits, he’ll probably wind up on the strong side of a platoon with Arias at second base. Still, the Guardians would likely prefer that the younger Arias be the one who breaks through.
