Police quit over harassment
A 19-year-old woman was told to pretend to be a prisoner after being pestered into accepting a lift home, the police complaints authority said yesterday.

She only agreed to the lift after working late in April because one of the officers used his radio to try to find her house number when she was badgered into giving them the name of her street name.

PC James Hall was forced to resign from Sussex police after a tribunal into the incident in April. His colleague PC Darren Hall - no relation - also resigned.

Workman dies on Spice set
A workman died yesterday after falling more than 80ft at Earl's Court while dismantling the set for a Spice Girls concert, police said.

The 28-year-old man fell and crashed through the ceiling of the arena at about 3.50am following a concert at the venue in south-west London venue.

An investigation is under way into his death.

Baby killed in 'vexed moment'
A man who murdered his lover's 11-month-old son in a "moment of vexation" while babysitting was yesterday jailed for life.

Richard Plender, 27, who was angry he could not go to a pub, kicked or punched Callum Barwick, causing the infant massive internal injuries, Wolverhampton crown court heard.

Mr Justice Poole told Plender that he had been convicted on "clear evidence" of the attack in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, last March.

Turner set for Graduation
The Hollywood actress Kathleen Turner is to make her British stage debut in a new version of The Graduate. The 45-year-old star will take the role of Mrs Robinson in a production which opens in April at the Gielgud Theatre in London.
