- I'm trying to upload some MP3 files of songs/live performances from a band that releases them on bandcamp without a copyright so people can bootleg them freely. Would it be possible to have my MP3 upload ability enabled? Scu ba (talk) 18:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- It's definitely not part of Commons aims to "bootleg" songs. Additionally, you were blocked for a 2nd time for uploading copyvios last year, and I see from your talk page that you had some copyvios from this year. That is definitely concerning to me. MP3s are also complex as far as copyright because the composition also has to be public domain or explicitly freely licensed in addition to performance and the recording. Abzeronow (talk) 18:39, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- These are explicitly stated as having been released into the public domain by the band themselves. The "bootlegger" is the name of the website that the band runs. To quote the disclaimer on the website: If anyone wants to release these albums, you’re free to do so. Here you’ll find links to audio files and cover art. Feel free to get creative with it if you like - it’s yours. Scu ba (talk) 19:34, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what else I need to do to argue my case here, I would only need autopatrol status for like a month to get these files up. You can check the website here for their release notice if you don't believe me quoting it. above. Scu ba (talk) 22:53, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

- I am all for people publishing free music on Commons, but I don't see any evidence that this music is free. The first album from your link only shows "(c) all rights reserved". Yann (talk) 17:43, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

- There was a copyvio earlier this year. And folksongs and stories have to be in the public domain as far as your recordings (folksongs definitely being a tricky area as User:Jmabel said recently.) Have you already researched the copyright status of the works you recorded? Abzeronow (talk) 17:19, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I have. Ekpeye folksongs and folk stories have been passed on for ages as oral tradition from parent to child. There are restrictions regarding the recordings which we (community) did. UMASOYE (talk) 17:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- FWIW, I can confirm that Umasoyee is being filtered from uploading MP3s: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchUser=Umasoyee.
- I only see one upload of theirs that was ever deleted specifically as a copyvio: File:Ada Omo Daddy.jpg was deleted as a promo poster. Also, File:Etá (Ekpeye wrestling).webm was deleted for lack of license, no idea what the story was on that. Their only other deletion, File:Black Hunter.jpg, was a scope issue (an AI image), and they were quite gracious about it when someone said it was out of scope. That's out of 100+ uploads, the rest of which look good offhand.
- @Umasoyee: can you explain a little better about the copyright status on the material you want to upload? I presume that the material is old enough to not have copyright issues, but could you confirm that? Are you the videographer? Have the performers signed some sort of release covering their copyrights (because it seems to me that otherwise you can't offer a license for their work)? What license do you intend to offer? I know this may seem like a bit of an interrogation, but the couple of things that got deleted don't fill me with confidence that you fully get the complexity of licensing materials other than simple photographs. I'd like to grant the relevant rights, but there is a very good reason we don't usually let less experienced users upload MP3s, because so many get it wrong.
- Please ping me if replying, I don't usually track this page but Abzeronow pulled me into the discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Jmabel: thank you for looking into this.
- Concerning my recent upload Etá (Ekpeye Wrestling) that was flagged for lack of license it was due to a technical error on my part, I uploaded that last video via video2commons and had not updated all the fields before hitting publish. When I logged in to commons to update the missing fields. I saw the video had already been flagged for deletion despite making the update.
- I have now re-uploaded the video with the license. The case of the poster was a mistake on my part (didn’t have adequate knowledge then) same for the AI image (actually generated by me), it was supposed to be a temporary image to be deleted immediately as I was facilitating a wikicommons training and needed to demonstrate how uploads are done, my bad.
- Regarding the MP3 materials which I plan on uploading they are indeed old enough to be in the public domain amd free to use. I am the recorder of the folkstories and songs which I intend to upload. I have the consent of the storytellers to share their work under the creative commons license.
- I intend to upload the files under the CC BY SA 4.0 license with the following attribution, “this audio features storytelling by…..”
- I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your attention to this matter. UMASOYE (talk) 21:59, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Umasoyee: Are you saying you uploaded the same file instead of filing an undeletion request? - Jmabel ! talk 02:53, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel if you’re referring to the ‘eta’ file yes. I didn’t know how to file the undeletion. UMASOYE (talk) 07:14, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Umasoyee: Commons:Undeletion requests.
- Umasoyee, I don't want to impede you doing what sound like potentially valuable uploads, but I'm sure you can see from the above why I hesitate to assume you completely know the ins and outs of what you are doing. The reason we don't let new users upload MP3s is because when we didn't have a rule like that, a high percentage of MP3s new users uploaded had problems, often ones that meant we could not keep the files. So I'm going to make a suggestion (Pinging @Abzeronow to make sure this also makes sense to him). We grant the right to Umasoyee, but with a specific understanding that Umasoyee will upload three MP3 files, and then contact Abzeronow and myself (Jmabel) to review those before uploading any more, so that if something here does not look right to either of us, we have a chance to head off any big problem, and we have an early chance to show Umasoyee anything that needs to be done differently. Would everyone agree to that? - Jmabel ! talk 07:27, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Jmabel for your consideration. This is fine by me, if @Abzeronow also supports. UMASOYE (talk) 09:42, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Agree this is exactly what we should do! I couldn't agree more. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 13:59, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

- I'd like to upload new versions of election maps in the 2024 United States elections, all of which were uploaded by users other than me. In Maryland, the state that I've focused most of my edits, ballots are still being counted and the percentage margins in each county are being updated daily, and I'm currently stuck having to ask the person who uploaded the maps for each election to update them for me. - The audio files that were deleted in December 2023 were clips from congressional hearings uploaded on C-SPAN. I saw similar clips being used on the pages of some U.S. representatives and figured these kinds of clips were in the public domain. They were not. Older than that were some images I uploaded of Joe Vogel, a Maryland state delegate who personally emailed me the images for use on Wikipedia, but were deleted by a VRT editor because they deemed that the images didn't have sufficient permissions. Y2hyaXM (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
- Since these file deletions, I've generally avoided asking state legislators for images to use on Wikipedia and have made sure that the audio clips I upload to Wikimedia are in the public domain, whether those clips be from videos uploaded by U.S. representatives onto their social media platforms (PD-USCongress) or from within the U.S. House chamber itself. AutoWikiBrowser access
[edit]- UPF official (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information)
- Dear colleagues. I would like to try using AutoWikiBrowser on my files for typo fixing, category checking, find-replace. I think VisualFileChange will not cover all my needs. Please, grant me access if appropriate. UPF official (talk) 10:44, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose honestly, I'm not sold on the idea of you requesting AutoWikiBrowser access a day after you were granted autopatrolled. There was a lot of issues with your edits when you requested the simplest autopatrol right. On the other hand, AWB is much more complicated and needs to be handled very carefully. In my opinion, you should have waited some time before requesting AWB and getting familiar with the rights you were recently granted. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 20:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

- Hi @Ratekreel. The image is in the category Gabrellia Lera. The category description says: "Gabrellia Lera, model also known as Andrea or Drea." In my opinion, it is not necessary to label the photo with just Nude Model 2016. Since the name is known, it can also be included in the file name for better comprehensibility. But if you as filemover think that the old name is good enough, just simply delete the request. Greetings: איז「Ysa」 10:58, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I do believe the filename is ambiguous and should be changed. My question is, do you think the file name you requested (File:Drea-4019 (2016).jpg) complies with our naming policy? Ratekreel (talk) 11:13, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Well, user Inertia6084 renamed the image exactly as I suggested. The image was uploaded by user VF9, who also uploaded File:Drea-4660 (2016).jpg. I based my suggestion on this one. And yes, it corresponds to the examples given under Criterion 2. The model's name is now included in the picture, so it's fine, or what more could you want? Otherwise you would have to rename all the images in the category to harmonize the whole picture series. If you think I don't have enough experience with renaming files yet, it's okay, I'll be glad to continue learning. Greetings: איז「Ysa」 14:09, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ysabella, as I mentioned above, I believe the filename was ambiguous and needed to be renamed (qualifying for a rename under Criterion 2). What I am asking is whether the filename File:Drea-4019 (2016).jpg complies with our file naming policy. --Ratekreel (talk) 18:12, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Dear Ratekreel, yes, maybe it would have been better of me to suggest File:Gabrellia Lera photoshooting February 2016 (4019) as a new name, but then you might as well start renaming the whole series. If I remember correctly, my previous suggestions were all implemented as suggested, except for the ones about the World Naked Bike Ride (I just suggested to name them WNBR, as an example Special:Diff/960165984, there were a few more). I think each of us has made some bad postponement suggestions that wasn't thought through, until we looked into the matter in more detail. Overall, my suggestions probably weren't that bad, otherwise two other file movers certainly wouldn't give me a support vote. איז「Ysa」 19:15, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ysabella, exactly. You could have suggested (under Criterion 2) something like File:Gabriella Lera photoshooting February 2016 (4019).jpg, which is more compliant with the file naming policy. Renaming the whole set is policy-compliant only if the filenames are being harmonized; otherwise, it is not allowed because they match no criteria for renaming unless the request comes from the original uploader. However, these details only emerge after careful and somewhat detailed consideration, which is expected from users holding advanced permissions. No comments on this request. I'll leave it to the judgement of administrators. Thank you! Ratekreel (talk) 21:18, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

- I do believe the filename is ambiguous and should be changed. My question is, do you think the file name you requested (File:Drea-4019 (2016).jpg) complies with our naming policy? Ratekreel (talk) 11:13, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- The filename "Drea-4019 (2016).jpg" feels sufficiently accurate and totally fine for me: it is similar to the pattern given in the third example line in COM:FR#FR2. True, the starting point, the originally chosen filename, is somewhat different to the one of the example on the policy page, but the inclusion of a work-related pseudonym and the creation year makes for a name that "speaks", that is searchable and also quite short. I would never have thought that it could possibly be against the policy. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:19, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- The filename is accurate, but something like File:Gabriella Lera photoshooting February 2016 (4019).jpg is more compliant with the policy in terms of being descriptive, specific, and common. FR2 (generic category) was applicable when the file was named File:Nude model 2016.jpg, but it no longer applies because it only covers cases where general terms, such as "smartphone," "birds," "people," or "women," are used instead of specific ones. It does not apply to vague names. Ratekreel (talk) 05:57, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ratekreel, thank you very much for your honest opinion, but please explain one thing to me? Did you just made it because of this one perhaps not so good suggestion, or did you also take a closer look at other suggestions I made? Were these perhaps inappropriate and did they not correspond to the policy? For example, what about Special:Diff/960735166, Special:Diff/960636719, Special:Diff/960636255, Special:Diff/960601677, Special:Diff/959999939, Special:Diff/959836533, Special:Diff/959562675, Special:Diff/959324588 and as a final example Special:Diff/959324835 but I could link a few more. As you can see, they were all implemented exactly as I suggested. איז「Ysa」 07:35, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- I forgott to mention but please let me add something. No matter how this ultimately ends, you have helped me enormously to improve my suggestions for improvement in the future and I would like to thank you very much for that. All the best: איז「Ysa」 08:47, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

- I found a lots of Bangladesh and India related file with problematic name here and here. I would like to help with renaming files on this category under Criterion 2 and 3. I am familiar with the renaming rules, and if I received this right, would help in Category:Media requiring renaming as well. Thank you. Borhan (talk) 08:37, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
