Your sandbox

I'd like to see that moved over and published in a day or so. It isn't time-sensitive and a few people could check it and the source stuff. I gave up on the original attempt as being hard to read - it probably needs refactored as a /Notes off the talk page when this goes in Main namespace. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:51, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks for pointing that out - I have been the subject of much heated debate over copyright ownership - much of which is my word against the policies (I will obiously loose)

Because I have the legal rights to republish stories written by reuters, there is much contriversy within wikinews about wheather (srry about the spelling) I should publish these stories. I can't be bothered debating the facts - I can publish these stories legally but, if no one wants to accept it, they are on their own!

In future, I will not contribute however, i will still be involved in wikinews video Symode09 09:29, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:Username

Hello, Doldrums! I use this name on every wikimedia project: I am an administrator on Commons, a long-time user on wikipedia, and I have over 56 accounts across wikimedia projects (yes all those are me). I've never come across a problem with my username before... is it a wikinews-specific problem or just a general concern? If it is going to cause a problem I could probably sign up with another name, though when SUL comes around I will have this username anyway. I could sign up then with another account but that may cause problems/be a hassle. I'll see what I can do, though, if my name is an issue :) — Editor at Large talk 07:14, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't see your name as an issue. DragonFire1024 07:16, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I could, possibly, use my name instead of username in my signature, perhaps? I greatly dislike doing this as it is both confusing when people try to find me or my pages (often the username and signature name will not be connected as they are rarely seen together) and I don't like broadcasting my name so openly, even if I and others do use it on-wiki. However, if it avoids problems then I suppose it is a worthwhile compromise; I can post on the noticeboard if you would like to ask others' opinions on the matter. — Editor at Large talk 09:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bg image

Did you notice my comment on WN:WC about an image I found, http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=87290915&size=l, I'm trying a part of it as my monobook.css, and the only thing I see is we'd need to either darken the "NEWS" part of the logo, or make it a different colour. Amusingly, the photo is of a pile of excess newspapers printed for the Katrina disaster and never sold/user. Thoughts? --Brian McNeil / talk 14:29, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

What do you want the title to say "Bloomberg maybe, might be, prepared to spend 1 billion dollars for presidency but says he will not run." I'll put the part saying he will not run and it is also in the main source also.

Fine, do it then, don't say it's bad and put the article stuck in Development. Summarizing the day!

I have an idea. I want to do a summarizing page for each day and add bits from the news articles on that date. For example, for tonight we should do (just an example) June 7, 2007 (Summary) (or a different format of link) and add only a few describing lines or a describing paragraph to explain the headline. We can give FULL STORY links to those articles. This looks like Wikinews Shorts and the Wikinews Main Page, but no. The summary page should include all headlines from that day. How about it? Updating articles over 24 hours old

Hi Doldrums - Thanks for the message. I totally understand the nature of articles over a day old, and I absolutely agree with that policy. The rationale that I used to make changes in this case, however, were because the article omitted a key contextual point. Leahy responded to a question that dealt directly with criminal contempt of congress, not just a simple court judgment on executive privilege. It's a distinct difference that I saw covered elsewhere, but not in this article. If he, for example, was quoted saying that today as a followup to his comments on Sunday, then absolutely I would have started a new story, but I felt that the prior article needed to include more information on the context of the discussion to accurately describe what Leahy actually said on Sunday. Hope that helps. Glad I can help out and contribute, and I appreciate the feedback as I get more involved. :) Aaron Ray 04:18, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

PD-article

Technically I have mentioned it several times on IRC, about instating the template as an option for authors to add to new articles - and nobody was able to say any reason it *wouldn't* be allowed under WMF policy (PD is encouraged), and legally it's certainly acceptable for me to license my story. Neither of the stories the article was on had any license-able edits by other editors anyways, merely stylistic, spacing, etc - now legally they could argue on the talk page that "I just added a bunch of paragraphs, I do not wish to have them be Public Domain", and assuming the paragraphs improve the article and are kept, the template would be removed. But as it stands, the template deserves a chance and falls within both WMF and legal guidelines for use. Sherurcij 16:57, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Old articles and adding things to them

Hi Doldrums, Policy is pretty clear about not adding new content to old articles. You know, the whole "not works in progress", etc. Recently, I reverted an edit by User:Blood Red Sandman, who had added a Wikipediapar link to w:Republic Airlines flight 4912 & SkyWest Airlines flight 5741 to the article NTSB releases updates on status of 3 major US investigations. My reason for this was that the Wikipedia article did not exist at the time of publication of the Wikinews article.

Blood Red Sandman then pointed out that you had recently added a Wikipediapar link w:2006 Slovak Air Force Antonov An-24 crash to article Slovak transport plane crashes over Hungary. In this case, the Wikinews article also predates the Wikipedia article.

So, I can understand why Sandman is confused. We obviously can't both be right since the examples are so nearly identical. Do you know which is correct? Should Wikinews add Wikipedia cross-wiki links afterwards? I think that I am right, and that you just didn't notice that the Wikipedia article was far older, but I am far from certain. I would like to hear back. Is there precedent? A rule of thumb? Should it be mentioned in policy? Cheers, --SVTCobra 22:32, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

You rarely appear in IRC so I can't bug you about my Benn interview there. Then there's the fact that you do an excellent job of separating your personal politics from Wikinews. However... Heh, thanks for the welcome. I have some familiarity with Wikis in general (done some stuff on Wikipedia, very much involved in a Wiki on modding TES4: Oblivion), but never really used Wikinews. I just felt the article was very much needed, because I'm having serious trouble figuring out what is going on - very few news outlets are covering it, and information is really hard thanks to MTA's web site dying incessantly.

Anyway, I appreciate the welcome, as I said. I saw most (all?) of those links when I signed up, but frankly, I don't really have time to learn everything.
