Use in construction

[edit]

Dade County Pine was used extensively in construction in Florida. Where it remains it is prized for it's strength, durability and termite resistance. The article should include this information. MrBill3 (talk) 20:00, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of the name "slash pine"

[edit]

This seems to be disputed. Some claim that it comes from the original settlers habit of "slash"ing the tree trunk in order to obtain the sap which was used for turpentine and rosin. See https://swflrelocationguide.com/things-to-do/attractions/native-landscapes/ and https://crewtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/CMT-Guided-Walk.pdf AndrewColeman2010 (talk) 00:15, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The first of those websites does not look like it qualifies as a reliable source. I'm a little leary of the second site being reliable for the etymology of the name. The first citation in the article after the etymology is given is to an off-line book, so I can't check what it says. I did find a site supporting the etymology given in the article, https://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/41600, which has an impressive list of references at the bottom of the page. CABI itself seems like a reliable source, but I really would like to find where they got the information from. I have to allow for the possibility they got it from WP. I would really like to see what older (pre-WP) reliable sources have to say. - Donald Albury 02:44, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
