"That ain't right," Addy said. "It ain't, but it's the way things is," Sarah said.
Addy and Momma have settled in Philadelphia, living in the garret above Mrs. Ford's sewing shop. They haven't been reunited with Poppa, Sam, and Esther yet but they have hope.
For the first time in her life, Addy can attend school and she immediately notices how different her desk partner's life is.
"Harriet had everything Addy had dreamed freedom would bring her. Harriet had fancy dresses. Harriet was smart. Harriet was sure of herself."
Addy and Momma have each other, and freedom but Addy can't help to be jealous of Harriet and want to be around her.
Sarah, Addy's best friend, warns her about Harriet - how Harriet wants to make Addy a slave to her whims...but Addy isn't so sure. Harriet had never been outright mean to her, and surely being around her wouldn't be so bad, even if it hurts Sarah's feeling...right?
I was surprised that book 2 focused more about how Addy was jealous of Harriet than anything else.
On the one hand, it makes sense because Addy had this idea of what freedom would afford her family and when she finally escapes to Philadelphia, she sees all she wants in Harriet's life. It would be hard NOT to be jealous of such a situation.
But after the harrowing escape for freedom, the traumatic separation from Poppa, Sam & Esther, and the probably emotional upheaval that comes from being enslaved to free...I just thought that those elements would take up more page space than they did in this book.
That being said, I did really like the emphasis on how important education was to Addy and her Momma - how much something as simple as reading street signs could change their lives.
I also really liked the friendship between Addy and Sarah. Sarah really had Addy's back and her support really shone in the story.
I also appreciated that the author included a very honest look at what Momma and Addy's lives were as they supported themselves while waiting for Poppa to find them.
Not a bad follow-up to Meet Addy, just wasn't the direction I expected....more

"Peter Rabbit was SO excited for Christmas...Soon it will be time for the best job of all - putting presents under the tree!"
Peter enjoys making mince pies and singing carols but he really can't wait to give his mom and sisters their presents that he's worked so hard on.
Only one problem:
"when he went to move the presents from his secret hiding place...they weren't there!"
Peter remembers that he moved the presents to keep them hidden from his sisters - but now he needs to venture into the forest to find these presents before the sun sets!
This one was a pretty good lift-the-flap book.
The cover boasts that there's tons of lift-the-flaps but most pages had 0-1 flaps, sometimes up to 3 but that was a rarity. A lot of the flaps were really tiny so unless your little one has fine motor control, it might be a bit difficult for them to do this without ripping.
I enjoyed the artwork and I liked how Benjamin Bunny comes to help Peter Rabbit on his quest. They visit a few popular figures from Potter's original tales - Jemima Puddleduck and Mr. Jeremy Fisher to name a couple.
I did like how you (as the reader) got to be the one to help Peter Rabbit find his family's presents but you never get to see the little bunnies unwrap the presents!
But I really wanted to know what Peter made the family. On the very last page, Mrs. Rabbit is shown holding a box with four red ovals in it but I'm at a loss regarding what that could be - it looks like a baked good but I'm not sure.
The other little bunnies are left holding their round, wrapped circles which really could be anything. Frisbee? Wheel of Cheese? A plate?

"As winter settles all around, and Christmas Day draws near... Busy Peter and his friends are full of festive cheer!"
Peter Rabbit and his family are running last minute errands and visiting their friends in the last few days before Christmas.
He has to deliver a letter, visit Jemima Puddleduck, skate on the pond and more! And when it's all done, the family of rabbits hunker down.
"Inside the burrow the rabbits all celebrate by the fire And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle sings carols with a choir."
Overall, I enjoyed this lift-the flap book. The story was simple but effective.
Every flap is a fun reveal - often of different Beatrix Potter characters having fun and celebrating Christmas - and should be a rather enjoyable experience for a little one.
I liked that we were able to see a variety of side characters from her other stories and that Peter was shown interacting with most of them.
The art style more closely resembled Potter's Original Peter rather than the newer and more simplified version but overall, I think it worked really well....more
