Great African Reads discussion

Hi everyone!
This is the thread for our Buddy Read of That Hair by Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida.

Anetq and me thought it was high time to read this short autobiographical novel soon, so we will probably start in the upcoming days :))

Yay!

I started the book yesterday and so far finished the translator's notes. I remembered now that the book is a mixture of novel and essay. It is a fictional account of the author's childhood who chose a main character named Mila (could be short for Djaimilia) rather than simply writing an essay about the difficulties of a young person of colour in Lisbon.
We will see how this works for us :)

Will join soon! Have been doing some home renovations that only let me do audiobooks, but almost done!

I am afraid I dnf-ed the book again (OMG!!!) and I remember why I did so already quite some time ago:

This book simply does not work for me as it is principally an essay disguised as a sort of a novella or vice versa... I really expected more story / action...

I would be interested in getting to know how this book works for other members of this group :))
