[close] Babies are undeniably precious, with tiny fingers and soft feet. As they grow and enter the toddler stage, their cuteness only becomes more pronounced. Those once tiny hands turn into delightful claws, grabbing at everything in sight. And those little feet adorned in super cute socks and shoes can now run, jump, and wiggle their adorable little toes. My son was the inspiration behind the poem, Little Little. In this video, I recite the poem to the nostalgic melody of Sweet Dreams by Tchaikovsky. I know these memories with my toddler, tantrums included, will be cherished forever.

[close] I never thought about this until recently, but the word spelling in Middle English meant “to speak, preach, talk, tell.” We also use the word to define the way to utter into the world magic. It probably shouldn’t be surprising the close connection between these things, but it has been sitting in my head ever since I had to start explaining my work to others. It is either odd or on brand that my brain has connected magic to marketing. Though, I do think that the act of creation is a kind of magic. Writing. Painting. Saying lines aloud. All these things require the mysterious and lonely inner life of the creator to appear for others to see. The artist, author, or actor wrestles with themself, fights past insecurity and doubt, and with skills born of endless practice, manifests something utterly unique. If you ponder that for a minute, it is absolutely wild that a) anything gets created in the world b) we don’t value the act more highly than, say, hedge fund management. Since that is not tr

[close] The Beck Series welcomes Ukrainian poet, translator, and journalist Iya Kiva. She was born in Donetsk, in 2014, due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, moved to Kyiv. Shortly after arriving, she began shifting from writing in her native Russian to writing in her second language, Ukrainian. Since February 24, she writes exclusively in Ukrainian.
