Anna Kendrick recently turned director with the Netflix drama Woman of the Hour. Following the story of real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on The Dating Game, the film received positive reviews from critics for Kendrick’s direction and the exploration of themes like systemic misogyny.
Kendrick has been vocal about her struggles in dysfunctional relationships in the past, revealing that she was in an abusive relationship for seven years at the time of Alice, Darling’s release. She recently opened up more about her experiences while in the relationship and mentioned that there were times when she was made to feel like the abuser.

This season, Fear the Walking Dead has adopted an anthology story structure, with last Sunday’s season premiere focusing on the very-much-alive Morgan, who just barely survived the wrath of axe-swingin’, baked bean-eatin’ bounty hunter Emile Laroux, hired by none other than the trailblazing Virginia (Colby Minifie). Needless to say, by the end of the episode it looks like Morgan’s fighting spirit is rejuvenated, and he’s dead set on wresting his people from Ginny’s grasp.
This Sunday’s episode focuses on Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Strand (Colman Domingo) as they struggle to navigate Virginia’s thriving settlement, where they’ve been delegated less-than-desirable societal roles, to put it mildly.
In the new clip, Alicia and Strand are escorted in handcuffs down the dirt roads of Lawton. They meet an ostensibly friendly teenager named Dakota, who claims to know who they are and bears a striking resemblance to a certain red-headed boss lady.

Fans have had to wait a while for Alicia Keys‘s seventh studio album, “Alicia.” Her previous album, “Here,” was released four years ago in 2016, and she had originally intended to drop this collection earlier in 2020. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic she pushed it back from March to May until finally it became available to listeners on September 18. So what do critics think of it?
SEE2021 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
As of this writing “Alicia” has a MetaCritic score of 77 based on 11 reviews counted thus far: nine positive and two somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. That’s one point higher than “Here,” and it’s actually her best MetaCritic score since her debut album “Songs in A Minor” back in 2001.
Keys is being praised for her “remarkable gift for classic soul-indebted melody,” to which she adds “more eclectic sounds than she’s tried before.” She’s “welcoming,...

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards are held in 2021, but the eligibility period for these kudos celebrating the best in music actually started on September 1, 2019, ending on August 31, 2020. So who will win Album of the Year?
This eligibility period is new for the Grammys. The recording academy moved up their calendar in 2020 in response to the Oscars, which moved their ceremony up to early February, which was when the Grammys usually aired. So the Grammys shifted their telecast to early January and adopted an eligibility calendar that ended a month earlier.

But that’s not the only change the Grammys have undergone in recent years. For the 61st annual event held in 2019, the academy expanded its top four general field categories from five nominees to eight in part as a response to criticisms over a lack of diversity among the nominees and winners.

There’s a time-honored tradition of turning celebrated movies into television series. A lot of them have ended up as sitcoms: “The Odd Couple,” “M*A*S*H,” “Alice” (spun out of Martin Scorsese’s 1974 landmark “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”). But not all of them. Did you know that “Casablanca” was turned into two different TV series, one in 1955 and one in 1983? (The latter starred David Soul as Rick Blaine!) In 1976, they tried it with “Serpico.” Sometimes, a series can seem a true extension of the movie it’s adapted from — that’s what happened with “Fargo” and “Dear White People.” Sometimes, the movie that spawned a series will come to seem a mere footnote to the show — that’s what happened with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Friday Night Lights.” And in the case of “Parenthood” (though it took two tries to get it right), a movie can be turned into...

The Best TV Supporting Actress Golden Globe has felt like it’s Meryl Streep‘s to lose even before anyone saw a second of her on “Big Little Lies.” If she does extend her win record to nine, “Big Little Lies” would also become the fourth show to win have more than one victory in the category.
Best TV Supporting Actress was added at the 28th Golden Globes in February 1971, and since then only “Alice,” “One Day at a Time” and “Downton Abbey” have managed to pull off multiple wins. The low number makes sense since the category combines all genres of TV, and a high number of stars from one-off programs like TV movies and miniseries have won over the years. Never mind the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association likes to move on to new things, putting regular series at a greater disadvantage.

Despite the existential anxiety surrounding the future of the theatrical experience, 2019 kept buyers busy. While Amazon’s big paychecks for “Late Night” and “Brittany Runs a Marathon” out of Sundnace didn’t exactly yield commercial hits, they started the year off with evidence of an active buyers market dominated by unpredictability — and plenty of more promising results. Sundance also found A24 nabbing “The Farewell” and Neon taking Grand Prize-winner “Clemency”; the company also picked up “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” out of Cannes following a fierce bidding war. At Tiff, HBO flexed some muscle with a shocking $20 million deal for TV-only rights to the Hugh Jackman cheating scandal saga “Bad Education.”

Not many shows would come panting out the gate with explicit, bloody period sex, but “The L Word: Generation Q” isn’t trying to be most shows. A sequel companion to Ilene Chaiken’s groundbreaking lesbian drama “The L Word,” which premiered 15 years ago on Showtime, Marja-Lewis Ryan’s new iteration aims to both honor the original series and push its boundaries beyond where it could, or dared, ever go. Sometimes, that means actually investing more time, energy, and consideration in non-white and trans characters. Other times, it means explicit, bloody period sex. All the time, “Generation Q” (which presumably stands for “queer”) is eager for approval from the Lgbtq+ audience that will watch and judge it circa 2019.
In the decade since “The L Word” first went off the air, Lgbtq+ representation has undergone a massive shift. Everything from prestige dramas to network sitcoms feature teens coming to terms with...

Being self taught in animating, script-work and directing, director Wan Dinnie founded D-Mulsion Production in 2008, through which he has gone on to create many short film projects, some of which were recently covered on our site.. Wan Dinnie is a true film fanatic, who loves to share his interest in film. Dinnie’s varied interest in films sees him constantly experimenting with various techniques, both in visuals and narrative. The mix of Diy, and noticeable influences creates a contrasting mix of familiarity and uniqueness within each production. Currently working as a teacher, his work often features his students playing an active role as cast and crew, which adds an undeniable charm to his work.
On the occasion of our coverage of his short films we got a chance to speak to the director about his creative process.

“Jejakmu” follows a student who has fallen into bad influences. Befriending delinquents, the student begins to misbehave in classes as well as try unsavory things such as smoking. The original version of the film is told through a silent, and experimental narrative, while the remake in 2014, while keeping the same themes, is presented as a drama, reminiscent of a PSA.
The two short films exist as important notes within the film career of Wan Dinnie, with both production coming in the way of important life moments, with the original Jejakmu showing his first attempt at the short film format, and the remake marking his beginning career as a teacher and focusing projects towards the classroom setting. Both of these productions show aspects that bring a lot of charm and enjoyment to his films. You don’t have to have an encyclopedic knowledge of comic books in order to know the basics of Batman. The story of his tragic childhood and tortured rise to become Gotham’s caped crusader has been told so many times, in so many iterations, that it takes some real innovation to make it at all interesting anymore.
On that front, The CW’s new “Batwoman” series (created by “Vampire Diaries” producer Caroline Dries) has a couple immediate advantages. For one, it’s not about Bruce Wayne brooding around his stately manor, but his cousin Kate (Ruby Rose) coming back to Gotham three years after Batman — whom she doesn’t yet realize is the same cousin she once thought of as her “irresponsible big brother” — has mysteriously disappeared. The city is on the edge and in danger of tipping over into total chaos. In Batman’s absence, Kate’s father...

MollywoodIt was Kg George who first explored the taboo topic of extramarital relationships, that too in his debut film, 'Swapnadanam' (1976). Neelima MenonMalayalam cinema has seldom stepped into unexplored terrains when it comes to the dynamics of extramarital affairs. These relationships are routinely judged, typecast and receive a clichéd treatment. And it goes without saying that women are always the ‘victim’. But, there have been exceptions to the rule too. Here's a look at films which have dealt with the issue and how the director chose to portray it. Rohini (Sreevidya) is married to Dr. Raja (Madhu), a businessman who shuttles between meetings in stiff suits. She is a college lecturer who is stifled by the lack of intimacy in their married life—that’s when she gets into a relationship with her ex-lover, Bhagyanath (Soman). After several clandestine meetings, her husband catches her red-handed and throws her out of the house.

A student is accused by his peers of smoking, the short film retraces the steps of leading up to the accusation to determine who the real culprit is, as well as reiterating the important choice for student’s abstain from smoking.
The premise of the short film, being pretty simplistic, does manage to tell the story in an interesting way by shooting the scene in reverse. At just over two minute run-time, the script does not really need to be strong, as it is more of a visual showcase. However, the intent to make an anti smoking message kind of gets muddy, and feels more like a dream one would have during cigarette withdrawal. it puts the production at an interesting point, where I can’t really tell where the message begins, and what is an excuse to create an experimental scene.
The visual and audio presentation is the real focus of the short film.

Eileen Jewell’s lyrically rich “79 Cents,” Miranda Lambert’s new “Bluebird,” and Lady Antebellum guitarist Slim Gambill’s jazzy numbers journey “54321” make up this week’s list of the best country and Americana songs.
Jamie Lin Wilson, “Alice”
A tribute to an old neighbor who’s “pretty as a flower [and] tough as saddle leather,” Jamie Lin Wilson’s “Alice” tells the story of a tough Texas woman who farms the bottomlands. To vividly paint a picture of southeast Texas, she fills the song with chiming acoustics, pedal steel, and her own Lone Star State drawl.

Pamplona, Spain — Few events were more anticipated at Conecta Fiction than the joint keynote delivered by HBO Latin America’s Roberto Ríos and HBO España’s Miguel Salvat. The room was packed, some attendees caught it from a screen outside.
That’s a sign of the draw of HBO’s brand in Spanish-language programming and of Ríos and Salvat. When it comes to Spanish-language premium TV series both executives are pioneers and now institutions. Ríos’ credits at HBO date back at least to the 2008-released “Alice” and Season 2 of “Epitafios,” produced with Pol-ka, the first ever premium limited TV series in Spanish bowing way back in 2003.
Salvat was the driving force behind two of Spain’s very first scripted premium series: “Whatever Happened to Jorge Sanz?” and “Crematorium,” released at Canal Plus España over 2010-11.
