Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an
undo
tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [1] - The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 August. It will be on all wikis from 20 August (calendar).
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on September 1. This is planned between 13:30 and 15:30 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis next week. This is a reminder. You can help by translating the announcement message. [3][4]

Page review training programme
Hi Cassiopeia,
I'm interested in getting involved with the New Pages Patrol. I've seen on the project's page that you have student slots available. I was wondering whether you might adopt me as a student on the training programme? Thanks and best wishes Modussiccandi (talk) 21:29, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
- Modussiccandi Good day. NPPSCHOOL program is a comprehensive program which requires the participant to spend time to read provided material (WP pages) and do the assignments. The project consists of 3 parts with 10 assignments and 1 final exam. It covers notability, sources, tagging, wiki project, subsort, wiki content policies, CSD, PROPS, AfD, communication, review and much more topics. Participant usually takes 2-3 months to complete the program (it depends how much time you spend on the program). Many participant abandoned the program due to the find they need to spend more time on the assignments/reading material as they anticipate but I dont think you would have any problem at all since you are a PhD student and reading some material and doing assignment would be easy for you. Once you have complete the program, you would equip with the knowledge to review new pages. Each participant work on the assignment at their own pace and most of them take about 2-3 months to complete it. If you have some personal commitment and need to take more than 7-10 days to work on the assignment, then just simply let me know. Let me know if you are still interest to join the program after reading the info above. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:24, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for all the information. I have more free time on my hands at the moment since my next university term doesn't start until October. So, I would still like to join the programme, if possible. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 12:11, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
- Modussiccandi Greetings. The program page has set up. Welcome to NPPS SHOOL. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk)
Dan Henderson
Hi Cass. An admin had blocked me for restoring Sherdog data in the infobox on Dan Henderson. I would appreciate it if you could let them know about the consensus on WP:MMA. It is here and on my talk page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dan_Henderson. NEDOCHAN (talk) 17:37, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I would appreciate your contribution on the Dan Henderson page.NEDOCHAN (talk) 09:38, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- NEDOCHAN Good day. I live in AUS and for such, I might not respond in time to those editors who live in US or EU. I have just commented on Hendo's talk page. Have a look and let me know if anything you need to know. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:30, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! NEDOCHAN (talk) 10:53, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- NEDOCHAN Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:00, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Muhammed Mokaev
Hi was wondering if you could take a look again at Mohammed Mokaev again. There is an article of him on the bbc and I have added that to the submitted article. Would you be able to review? Rassmallai (talk) 09:26, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Rassmallai Good day. For a MMA fighter, they need to have at least 3 fight under tier one promotion (UFC/Invicta) to pass notability guidelines or black belt(senior) medalist in IBBJF in BJJ competitions. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:37, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
3RR and edit warring
I have responded to your comments on the talk page of Dan Henderson but in a vain attempt at keeping discussion there on the article and not editors, I will respond to number one here: (from WP:EW) The three-revert rule is a convenient limit for occasions when an edit war is happening fairly quickly, but it is not a definition of "edit warring", and it is perfectly possible to engage in an edit war without breaking the three-revert rule, or even coming close to doing so.
Not a single one of the reverts since April had any form of discussion with the editor that had been reverted. Someone was bold (be it an IP or a new user), an editor reverted (NEDOCHAN) and there was absolutely zero discussion on the talk page of the article or on the other editors pages. I warned the user about this and they immediately carried out a revert. 3RR is a bright line but edit warring can exist outside of that bright line which this case is a perfect example of. In summary, the block was for edit warring not a violation of the 3RR. Woody (talk) 12:34, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Woody Good day and thank you for the message above. I understand NEDOCHAN didnt communicated with the IP edtior(s) He indeed did not violate the 3RR but do understand his behavior of doing the revert after your warning message to him and the way his communication might not be as civil as it should. However, his intend iwas a good faith one and he has helped countless copy editing in Wikipedia pages and has not been "intentionally" harm Wikipedia in anywhere in his contribution. I understand a personally message to the editor might help things in different light and I believe he has learned from this incident. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:45, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
- Not sure why I didn't get that ping. I have no doubt that he has an edit history and I have assumed good faith in my interactions so far. If I thought he was intentionally harming wikipedia I would have blocked him site wide not just on a single article where there was an issue. As per the unblocking guide the blocked editor will be unblocked
This isn't about the editors, this is about the content and how we show what the sources say to our readers. The whole point of starting a way forward section on the talk page was to avoid discussing the editors behaviour and concentrate on a discussion on how to resolve the disparity in sources and show this to the reader. That is all I want now out of this so I can remove all this from my watchlist and get back to improving article content. Woody (talk) 20:16, 20 August 2020 (UTC)if the blocked editor can convince any admin that the block is no longer necessary because you understand what you are blocked for, you will not do it again...

- Woody G'day. From my understanding there are two issues here (1) the unblocked of NEDOCHAN (2) the sourcing. I have a quick look at NEDOCHAN talk page and understand there is so heated communication. I understand the unblock process for I am a counter vandalism trainer and fighter in Wikipedia and I have seen many editors requested their account to be unblocked. I understand both side of yours and NEDOCHAN views and will drop a note on his talk page and hope he would listen to my advice to respond to unblock requests. As for (2) sourcing - I have read your proposal on Hando (Den Handerson) talk page and I will respond on Hendo talk page tmrw for it is close to midnight here and I am heading to bed. Good night Woody. Cassiopeia(talk) 13:29, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Once you have complete the program, you would equip with the knowledge to review new pages. I am the trainer for CVUA and NPPSCHOOL, do note that NPPSCHOOL program is a lot harder than that of CUVA and I do expect answers provided need to supported by guidelines, justification of your reason, provide all hist diff for any tagging, article page, editor talk page, reports/discussion pages and any relevant hist diffs. Let me know if you are still interest to join the program after reading the info above. At the meantime, pls complete WP:TWA please. Btw, you can delete the messges on your talk page, however, it is not a good idea just to remove the not accepted articles / selected messages. Leave them all for archive for all the messages still can be viewed from your history log page. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:10, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- How will i archive my talk page? Tbiw (talk) 08:30, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- Tbiw First of all, please add additional colon " : " from the previous message thread before you start writing (I have added it for you, pls see it in "source editing" mode) - the colon is to indent one space to the right as this is the communication protocol in Wikipedia. Ps read Help:Wikitext for more Wikipedia mark up. As for achieving, pls read and follow the instructions at Help:Archiving a talk page. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:41, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

- Tbiw Again, pls add the additional colon before you start writing. I would be hard for you to take up the program as there are script you need to download to do the assignment and TWA is a very important basic info an editor needed prior to start the program. Try to find yourself a laptop and get back here when you have done that. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:07, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
yooo i wanna be in anti vandalism
i see there is opening in anti vandalism. because of the pandemic i have f- all to do so i'd like to see if i could do the training! Nolanisntfunny (talk) 23:33, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- Nolanisntfunny Greetings. Pls note that you need to have minimum 200 total main space edits to join the program. As of now you have 60 total main space edit - see here. Once you reach the minimum total main space edit, then pop back here. At the mean time pls complete WP:TWA program to gain some basic info of Wikipedia guidelines. Thank you. Reply tool
The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
- More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
- Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
- Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[5]
The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).
The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.
New requirements for user signatures
- The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
- Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.
Next: New discussion tool
Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

NPP school
user: tbiw is back to get his NPP school. I have completed WP: TWA Tbiw (talk) 22:44, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- Tbiw Good day and thank you for the link. Participant usually takes 3 months to complete the program (it depends how much time you spend on the program). Many participant abandoned the program due to the find they need to spend more time on the assignments/reading material as they anticipate. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 07:24, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

Counter-Vandalism Unit/Academy
Hello, Cassiopeia. I would appreciate if you were to agree to being my mentor in the Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Academy. Thank you and best regards. Juan de Bolas Talk 11:00, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Juan de Bolas Good day. Please note that there are many editors who were interested in counter vandalism course and abundant the program mid way due to lack of anticipation of the amount of efforts/time needed in reading the program material, doing assigned "homework" and exams requirements . Generally, it would take an editor 1.5-2 months to finish the course. So do prepare yourself for lots of reading and homework.
Please make sure you enable WP:Twinkle and know how to provide hist diff - see here Wikipedia:Simplest diff guide. Once you have done the assignment and would like to get it review then ping me on the sub page (at the end of the assignment). I will usually review the assignment a day after you ping me. Do raise any questions of the review if there are any, if not and you are ready to proceed to next assignment then let me know and I will post it accordingly. One thing to note - very important - Do NOT revert more than 3 times within 24 hours on the same page if the edit you reverted are NOT considered blatantly vandalism for you will be blocked. Please bear in mind. The motto of the Counter Vandalism Unit is Civility – Maturity – Responsibility. Welcome to CUVA. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:40, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Tony Ferguson’s record.
@Cassiopeia Hey man, on ESPN Tony Ferguson record is 26-4. But on wiki his record is 25-4. IMAHua (talk) 04:15, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- IMAHua Good day. Ferguson's ESPN fight record here-1 and Sherdog is here-2. Wikipedia uses Sherdog for all MMA fighter fight recrod. The different is that ESPN record one additional fight on June 2, 2011 against Chuck O'Neil for the semi-final TUF TV reality show bout which is not considered a official professional fight for it is a TV series event. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:38, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Oh okay. IMAHua (talk) 17:35, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
