Oh my! So scary! NOT.
A bas-relief, weird events, dark cults, secret documents and obscure references, everything points to an ancient creature, dormant since eons ago, something immensely powerful, and beyond horrifying. The mythical Cthulhu.
First ever Lovecraft! Very interesting to finally know the legendary story that inspired and spawned countless of other works. However, must say it was pretty boring, slow paced and exceedingly difficult to read, even for a classic.
This was overall ok, but far from enjoyable. Will try a couple more of his stories, and possibly something in spanish to see if it makes any difference, but not really looking forward to it.
It's public domain, you can find it HERE.

PERSONAL NOTE :
[1928] [43p] [Horror] [2.5] [Not Recommendable]
-----------------------------------------------
★★★☆☆ The Call of Cthulhu. [2.5]
★★☆☆☆ The Rats in the Walls. [1.5]
-----------------------------------------------
¡Uy pero qué miedo! NO.

😆 agree he's not scary, but some elements are interesting. I actually prefer what people are doing with cosmic horror nowadays. Flashy first sentence and on the point review, Federico 🖤

Kay wrote: "I've yet to try Lovecraft. Haha, won't be this one obviously. Great review Federico!"There's a lot of other stuff to choose from xD. Thank you Kay !
Aha! I've been waltzing around Lovecraft for I don't know how long, as in "I should probably read the stuff that had influenced blablabla..." Well, we'll see. Loved the review :)
I absolutely agree! One of his most underwhelming work in my opinion, meanwhile some of the other stories are so terrifying that I couldn’t sleep for days after reading them. Idk why is this the most popular 🤷🏻♀️
Fair review, Federico - I've stayed away from this one because it seems so mediocre, but I highly recommend his story "The Lurking Fear." It was spooky!

Loved the review :)"Been waltzing all my life too until now. He's a legend and all that, maybe another one of his books would be best lol. Thank you Alexandra :D !

I can't say this review is incorrect. I'm reading (if I can squish it between books) the whole Lovecraft work, and I find the stories are not that good, more like good ideas but not fully developed. But the setting is really good.Looking forward to see your next Lovecraft review.

Gracias por la data Yani :)
Lovecraft was, despite the insistence of many of his die-hard fans, not a good writer. What he was great at was coming up with fantastic and weird ideas. Occasionally, his execution was pretty lame. Some of his later stuff---At the Mountains of Madness, especially---was great.

Nice to know I shouldn't expect much from any of his writings lol. Seems the common denominator for Lovecraft will be "Fantastic ideas poorly executed." xD

It's still too early to tell yet but it seems "Fantastic ideas poorly executed." will most likely be my general impression after reading any of his works lol. I'm getting mixed opinions regarding At the Mountains of Madness so I guess we'll see how I feel about it xD. The Lurking Fear might be the one after that :)

And I agree (for now) with tha sentece of fantastic ideas poorly executed.
Sorry this was not more captivating. Glad you will try a couple more of his stories and better luck hopefully!

I will pick this up the day I can figure out how to pronounce 'Cthulhu'! 😄Wonderful review, Federico! <3 Too bad it wasn't as scary as you had anticipated.

I have my way of pronouncing it but I don't know if it's correct I'll have to research it lol. No biggie, it happens. Maybe another of his works might go better, time will tell. Thank you Rosh :)
Glad you got around to your first Lovecraft too now, even if he might not have been completely to your liking! Really curious about this story myself :)
Fabian {Councillor} wrote: "Glad you got around to your first Lovecraft too now, even if he might not have been completely to your liking! Still, only one way to find out Fabian ;)
Peter (catching up) wrote: "Fantastic review Federico. I haven't read Lovecraft yet, so this is the one to start with?"Thank you Peter! I really wouldn't know if this is the best point to start with. I'm not a Lovecraftian fan, but I do hear this story is the origin of many of later works.
Yep, I think Lovecraft gets over-sciency sometimes; in other words, the man gets very, very boring. What a name though, hey?And that creature gives me chills:

Thank you Sarah. Hope it isn't as boring 🤨
Karen wrote: "Oh no! I have yet to Lovecraft and I guess I won't start with this one. Great review! 🙂"Thank you Karen! Plenty of Lovecraft to choose from :) !
Good review! I agree that sometimes H.P. Lovecraft isn't as scary as one would expect in some of his stories. I did a cromprehensive review of his complete stories some years ago, if you look for it in my read books, maybe you'll find useful to chose what other stories to give it a shot ;)

I have already At the Mountains of Madness, The Lurking Fear and The Dunwich Horror to read next. I like to go blind with a book so I never read reviews beforehand. But ofc will visit your reviews in time after finishing them :)
Shey wrote: "Good thing it's only 43 pages. 😄 Hope your next Lovecraft is better. :)"It felt a lot more than that lol. Thank you Shey :D !
The app won't let me post links here, so I suggest you (and anyone) to watch the youtube video "Why cosmic horror is hard to make" by the channel Screened. This video really helped me get a perspective on the Lovecraftian horror. It talks about why cosmic horror is really hard to adapt into movies and he just really explains the horror behind it. A cool video.
