"I think I'm just breathing, that's all. And there's a difference between breathing and being alive."
With my seat in an upright position and tray table stowed, I braced myself for another adventure, courtesy of Mr. Boyne. However, as I cracked open the cover and read the first few lines, I quickly realized that no seatbelt on earth could secure me — I was in for one doozy of a ride.
"Seated opposite me in the railway carriage, the elderly lady in the fox-fur shawl was recalling some of the murders that she had committed over the years."
Tristan Sadler, our narrator, is traveling by train from London to Norwich, England, on a mission of utmost importance. The year is 1919, and he has returned from the Great War — though only in body; his soul remains elsewhere.
This book was not how I imagined it to be; it was so much more. Over the course of two days, I walked beside Tristan and witnessed love, loss, war, and unimaginable betrayal. By the end, I was wrung out but had cherished every moment.
If you haven't read Boyne yet, I highly recommend this spectacular novel. His writing is immersive, and his flawed, broken, and utterly human characters will leave you eager for more.

Another fabulous review, Kimber! The unimaginable betrayal you speak of had me shouting at the page and lingered long in my mind thereafter. A terrible moment, but Boyne likes to toy with our emotions — and this was a great read!
Beautiful review of this most stunning and powerful book, Kimber. I love how you characterized your reading experience of this book by John Boyne.
Boyne is one of the most reliable authors writing today. I have loved every book of his I have read. Fantastic review, Kimber.

Thank you kindly, Kevin!
It truly was a stunning betrayal, and I never saw it coming. Boyne is a master at drawing in readers only to break their hearts. (I love it!) I'm glad this book resonated with you as well! : )

You're welcome!
Nice review, Kimber. I’m glad you liked it better than me. Great author but not my kind of storyline and the characters were such terrible people. I wanted some kind of empathy for them but they left a bad taste in my mouth. Great review, chica!
"By the end, I was wrung out but had cherished every moment.""The Heart's Invisible Furies" was one of the best books I have read or heard. The quote from your excellent review, Kimber, is what keeps me from enjoying more of Boyne's writing.
At 84+, physically I am not so fragile, but mentally, I probably am a bit😑. So, I don't want to be stricken by 'unimaginable betrayal' or 'wrung out' after reading any book, particularly one by such an esteemed author.
Wrung out is the perfect description. It’s so heart wrenching but the journey is so well written that you become completely invested. Tristan absolutely breaks your heart. Glad you were so touched by this one! I was, too. John Boyne never ceases to impress.
Good one Kimber, thanks for the recommendation. Just read my first two by him, Water and Earth, outstanding writing.
Daniel wrote: "Great review Kimber. Boyle is an outstanding author who deserves more of my attention"Thanks so much, Daniel! I hope you get a chance to read something by Boyne one day. : )

Beautiful review, Kimber. Captivating quotes. I love your enthusiasm for Boyne. I will be reading his elements novellas soon. Adding this one to my list.

While a different time period and location, you might enjoy reading The Good Lord Bird by James McBride which was adapted to a limited series starring Nathan Hawke..its the story of John Brown's absolution campaign during the Civil War and is magnificent
