Rock Paper Scissors

I’m writing a fresh review, because the previous one, which I’d written simultaneously while reading this damned book, wouldn’t even barely come close to the anger I now feel after having FINALLY completed the book.
To put in simple words, I’M FUMING. The author seriously was wasted when she wrote this, I think. It was horrible. Poorly executed story, I mean, can it get any more lame? The beginning was a big unnecessary-information dump. Tedious work to read through those.
This is the tale of three psychotic people, who take turns “rock-paper-scissor”ing their lives away. I’m not kidding, who plays a game of rock, papers and scissors and decide if they are gonna stick together or go their separate ways. Twice.
The time they spend together stuck in the chapel. You see, she “almost let him fall” and he didn’t even know how but suddenly they’re on the road by some unanimous decision and they hit a woman in a red kimono, then he’s waking up in the bed and it all turns out to be a dream.
…I don’t know what to say.
And oh, after your husband cheats on you (with an excuse that he thought it was his wife, mind you! Faceblindness or not, he would have known!), you lure them into somewhere, plan to kick his current wife out and move back in to how things were before. Because that’s exactly how revenge turns out.
Meanwhile, Mr. Wright had some very conflicted events going on.
Adam at 5%: I love my wife.
Adam at 32%: any love I had left for her is spent.
Adam at 92%: It was never really love with Amelia.
Yeah, this idiot finally “realises” that he was coerced into the marriage, while it never really felt like “love” to him. They actually got me there, trying to convince me that he didn’t have a brain or will of his own, and was simply a puppet to Amelia’s show. Even when the sick bastard was the one responsible for everything that went down.
Dis-fucking-appointed.
Especially with the last two chapters. Look, I know the author was trying for a climactic and grand AF close to the novel, but that one? That was a sorry excuse for one. And Sam who-the-who’s chapter? Who even asked, I didn’t sign up for that? I didn’t care at all! Why not include Bob’s chapters while they were at it? That was the only thing missing from this shithole.
I thought I knew what I was getting myself into when I saw the reviews, but hell knows I didn’t expect it to be this bad. I feel like I shouldn’t even bother with one star.
I guess I should feel bad for bitching about this book and the way the author wrote it, but I don’t. Feeling irritated by that last sentence? Because who cares? That’s exactly how I felt when Adam spewed shit like that. Hell, I don’t think I’ll ever hate a character like I did Adam.

I've never heard of this book before but the fact that the book tried to justify the cheating with "he has faceblindness" is so wonderfully nonsensical. As if voices weren't a thing 🤡 or he didn't recognize his wife somewhat by touch 🤡 but I guess that's obvious inconsistency judging from your review. Sorry for the tragic bust, Sanju. Hopefully you find a much better (or less terrible?) book soon.
@Candy TELL ME ABOUT IT, my goodness! He actually said, “I thought it was you” to his wife after being caught in bed with another woman. Such and such, I hated Adam. Inconsistency can be annoying. Thank you, and yes I hope so, Candy! 😄
THANK YOU for putting all my exact thoughts into words!! Couldn’t agree more. The beginning so boring and unnecessary and then the end trying to be so grand it barely makes sense. All the characters were so unlikeable and unrelatable
@Ebony Of course!! Everything about the book was boring as hell. The so-called twists were pathetic. You mean Adam, Amelia, Robin and Henry. They actually made a book out of four characters, who weren’t in the least bearable😂. And of course, Ben, who served his purpose when needed.
@SanjuInteresting review. Can't say I agree with parts of it, but I respect it.
My views are as below - SPOILER ALERT
The way I saw it was that unreliable and very flawed characters was the whole point (if not a very large part of) the story. To address your specific point about Adam's inconsistency around his feelings for Amelia: he was an insecure, immature and self-absorbed man, who craved admiration of others and who wasn't great at taking accountability for his actions. For this reason, the bit about cheating on his wife and using his face blindness as an excuse seemed believable to me. It felt clear to me that his wife knew he was lying as he said it. Also for this reason, his blaming of his second wife wholly for the decisions he made after his first marriage ended. and his lack of accountability also served to absolve him the guilt that caused his trauma in the first place.
I agree that the book was a very slow burn more than 75% of the way through and admittedly didn't engender enough suspense or excitement to keep me reading continuously. But I'm glad I did, because I personally felt that the twists were fantastic and engaging so made the preamble worth it. I do take your point about the first wife's motives around wanting revenge after 2 years, maybe it's because of what she knew?
I really like flawed characters and the choices they make can feel frustrating cos they're realistic. I know it's not a perfect story but I enjoyed it all the same. Hope your next read is a better one!
@Ashy Well, I’m glad you were able to enjoy this book, plus the characters..? And yes, though the wife knew he was lying, the fact that he thought that lie could have been a plausible excuse as soon as he was caught did not sit right with me. She was his wife of around ten years(if I remember correctly?), so surely her face isn’t the only hint is it? But I appreciate your take on the whole thing. It’s also good to know someone was able to enjoy this novel. I couldn’t:( To me, Adam is an untrustworthy person, seeing how he had no problem switching between wives when he pleases and as you said “immature”. So yeah, thanks, Ashy. Have a good read next too!
Okay this review made me laugh with tears in my eyes. This book made me so angry too. What was everyone else reading?!
LOL this review has me dying!!!!! I absolutely did not care for this book myself, was really disappointed i even finished it. Lots of people kept raving about it saying the ending was so great… it was a big waste of time honestly and so confusing.. nothing really made sense when you think about it.I agree… wheres the dogs povs? Would have been a heck of a lot more exciting than adams. Couldnt stand him from the start.
I have questions! There was a part in the book where Adam was walking down the stairs and his wife noticed that he knew which creaky stairs to avoid and he had mentioned that he knew his way around the church. That never amounted to anything??! And he had mentioned a few times that his wife was a liar.. and that they had both cheated?? but what was he referring to? Because at that stage he didn’t know that Amelias past was..
Among other things, what didn't sit well with me was the "private investigator," who didn't find Henry's lack of contact suspicious and investigate it.
Having just finished the book, I feel just the same! I'm glad there are more people who won't give this shit 5 stars 😂
Best review of this book!! 😂 I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I thought the plot was absolutely terrible. Not a fan - except for Bob. Bob was cool.
Victoria. Yes. That and in the beginning where he goes straight to a cupboard and gets a broom and pan. Both made me think Adam was the one who knew the place already.
DUDE, I cannot tell you how much i agree with this review. My critics is this whole review, plus a few more things-(Spoilers)
The fact that Amelia is made to be the big bad villain and Adam and Robin are given a good ending really pissed me off. Its like the Author threw in Amelias back story last minute to make sure the readers were on robins side. What im trying to say is amelias backstory felt to conveniently placed, not to mention it felt like she put all those crimes on Amelia seemed so rushed
Im not saying people like this dont exist irl, but it just felt SO convenient, and they made Robin seem like the good person, not telling us anything about her besides being abused and neglected by her father, and the backstory makes me feel like we have to sympathize with her.
The thing that irritates me the most though is the fact that Adam got away scott-free. Its the fact that the novel brushes aside his cheating and gives him a good ending too. It takes 2 to cheat. And the end part where it reveals the true memory of him driving the car faster with Amelia when they were 13? So you make Amelia out to be the bad guy, only to find out that Adam was driving the car?
Why is Amelia the one blamed for this whole ordeal? I know she was telling him to drive faster, but from what i read, he went faster and looked away from the road for a moment, causing him to hit his mother! They BOTH are at fault? Why does Robin want this man?
