This wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. It had a very cliché premise with an extremely subpar execution. There was absolutely no depth to this whatsoever, and neither did we see any details of the story, characterization or romance.
We skipped in time about a billion times, which meant we didn’t get to see any of the actual development between the couple. We don’t see them falling in love, we don’t get to understand why they develop feelings; honestly, we aren’t even told why either of them become attracted to the other, which is odd considering the less than stellar circumstances these two find themselves in, meaning it wasn’t exactly likely anyone would feel any lust in that situation, so an explanation as to why they did would have been appreciated.
Considering it’s a story about human trafficking and the main character finds himself in a ‘prison’-like situation with his ‘love interest’ as captor I would have expected more hate, mistrust and resentment, so it was pretty weird to see that they suddenly had this giant amount of sexual chemistry, let alone an intimate or romantic connection. It just wasn’t explained properly, and therefore, failed to show me a relationship with true feelings and emotions. It was mostly just lust, especially at first, and after that it seemed there was merely an unhealthy obsession between them. Not love.
This book was Stockholm Syndrome at its finest, I suppose. Although I would have loved more proper development for it to be believable. But that’s probably too much to ask of this author.
It’s just mindless fun with a toxic, possessive couple doing obsessive and insane things; a typical AH book. Yet, still, there was something missing here that I did find in a bunch of her other books. Something about the couple just didn’t work that well.

Aiden crawled into Zain’s lap and looped his arms around his neck. “Hey,” he said with a small, fond smile. “What’s got you brooding now?”
Fond. He had no business looking at him this way. Sometimes Zain wanted to shake him. He might not have kidnapped Aiden himself, but he had treated him horribly at the beginning. Zain didn’t deserve his fondness. He didn’t deserve the soft smiles.
He still craved them like a thirsty man craved water in the desert. He wanted everything—every smile, every millimeter of skin, every molecule.

I gave up on this series, Imme, I think it’s lost its shine some time ago though I was very tempted with this one. However, the reviews made me decide against it lol. Excellent review, very similar to most of the other reviews regarding the relationship development. ❤️❤️❤️

@Nicole — Ah, yea, I do think you’re right; the series lost quite a bit of its shine with the later releases, and this one didn’t bring that charm back either😕
such an interesting premise with the human trafficking/captive, bummer the relationship development was so skipped over
this series felt so underdeveloped and poorly written for me. especially some of the characters were borderline psychotic (and they weren’t meant to be). such an interesting idea but poorly executed :/ lovely review, imme!
I haven't seen many good reviews for this installment. So sad this was such a disappointment for most of you. :((
Oh No!! 😱 I'm a huge fan of AH and look forward impatiently for all her books in all the ongoing 3 series.. I'm sorry that this was disappointing.. I'll still read it though.. (I'm BFF aka Big F%^$# Fan) Although, I have to say that this series is becoming repetitive, she can stop it at this one and put her efforts in the Omegaverse series or Calluvia series.Great honest review though Imme!!
yeah i've been seeing pretty much the same thing about this installment. idk if it's worth it really lol but i'm glad you enjoyed parts of this, even if it's just mindless AH fun! i get what you mean; some of her books have genuine connection but it's a shame this one didn't. love the review!
Wow! Fourteen books and so few of them above four stars! This is one extremely subpar series lol! I truly admire your persistence Imme. Honest review! Crossing my fingers for #15. C'mon AH you can do it!
Girl am seeing you on my feed after so long. Idk why GR does that at times. Anyway, am sorry this book captivated you just a little and not fully.. Get it? Lmao. But sorry this one missed the mark. Hope your next read is far better!!
I feel your pain with the lack of depth in the story. We need to understand the why of them falling in love 😕
Uh no. I hate whenever books don’t actually show the relationship growing instead it just either tells or just keeps going to nowhere basically:/ Especially with something like a captor/captive romance there needs to be development along the way. Hope your next read is better💛.
i love this honest review sm! i was always curious about these books, but now i know for sure that they probably won’t be for me. i’m glad you were able to enjoy some parts of this book ml!
Oh dear, I’ve been putting this one off, and it looks like I’m going to continue to do so. I can only suspend reality so far. 😂 Great review though!
