The Monkey's Paw

Steep price.
Mr. and Mrs. White with their son Herbert are spending the day in their cozy country house, playing chess and knitting, while enjoying the upcoming night. Their leisure-time momentarily interrupted when an unexpected guest arrives at their doorstep; Sergeant Morris, recently returned from the war, with a fantastic tale of woe, and one mysterious-looking monkey paw, said to grant three wishes to its possessor.
A short yet impactful little classic tale about the potential consequences and costs of our deepest desires. Sometimes your dream is not in reality as beautiful as you imagined it to be, sometimes a simple wish is not actually as free or easy as you might expect it to be. The theme is of course as known and predictable as the table of one thanks to countless adaptations and general knowledge, but I think it's still worth the twenty minutes if you wish to get to know in detail one of the great originals.
It’s public domain. You can find it HERE.

PERSONAL NOTE :

★★★☆☆ The Monkey's Paw [3.5]
★★★☆☆ The Lady of the Barge and Other Stories <--

Elevado precio.

They should know better… haha. Nothing comes for free, especially if it’s from an unexpected guest with a monkey paw. Thanks again for adding to my list of freebies, Fede! Hope you have a great day. 🫶🏻

The ideas may be well known, but sometimes messages are worth repeating! Personally, disembodied paws are NOT the first thing I'd want to make a wish on, but ... to each their own. lol Great review, Federico!

I say a 4-leaf clover is the way to go lol. Thank you Kat!
Great review, Federico. It looks like you are making your way through a lot of those classics I should reread. Thanks.

Such a famously known tale, yet WW.Jacobs seems to be fairly unknown despite of it lol. Glad to hear you enjoyed it too Rosh <3. Thank you!

Never have I ever read this book, Feddy! Guess that's why I still wish someone would give me a dang monkey paw!?
Sarah wrote: "Never have I ever read this book, Feddy! Guess that's why I still wish someone would give me a dang monkey paw!?"Wonder-Sarah doesn't need no stinking monkey paw. Wonder-Sarah makes her own wishes come true.
This monkey paw story seems strangely familiar, though I’m sure I’ve never read it. Must be a classic. Cool that this shortie was so impactful. Great review, Federico.
Thibault wrote: "This monkey paw story seems strangely familiar, though I’m sure I’ve never read it. Must be a classic. Cool that this shortie was so impactful. Great review, Federico."The 3 wishes theme has been extensively alluded in so many and various formats, Thibault. I'm positive you've watched one or several adaptations in your lifetime, as we all have lol. Even if we didn't know it at the time :p. Thank you!
aly wrote: "thank you fot sharing! this book sounds like a one powerful read. great review federico :)"A creepy but entertaining little classic. Thank you Aly :D !

Nora wrote: "Terrific review, Federico! Your review makes me want to read this book even more!"Thank you Nora! You must've added it for a reason then ;)
I love this story. The Monkey’s Paw leaves a sour taste in my mouth, yet it draws me in with its morbid charm. The tension and sense of dread are unforgettable. Very apt review, and it makes me wonder if you will read more of Jacobs’ work, such as Sea Urchins or Many Cargoes.

Very apt review, and it makes me won..."Thank you Zyaff! It's indeed a charming horror classic lol <3. I just read The Lady of the Barge and Other Stories, which had many of WW Jacobs short stories, just not those two, sadly.
Darla wrote: "A brilliant review, Federico. I read this story years ago and it has stayed with me. 🙈"It sure makes one eerie lasting impression :x. Thank you Darla!
You brought me back to what I so enjoyed about this story, Federico. Impactful and haunting, and leaves what's on the other side to your own imagination. Maybe it was one of the first to recognize that old saying, "be careful what you wish for", and to this day who forgets that? Nice review!
Ron wrote: "You brought me back to what I so enjoyed about this story, Federico. Impactful and haunting, and leaves what's on the other side to your own imagination. Alejandro wrote: "Awesome story that inspired several adaptations and tributes. Great review!"Indeed. A classic of the ages :). Thank you Alejandro!
Their first mistake, monkey paw. Glad you enjoyed this little cautionary tale of fate, Federico. Beware the paw of the monkey.
Jan wrote: "Their first mistake, monkey paw. Glad you enjoyed this little cautionary tale of fate, Federico. Beware the paw of the monkey."Thank you Jan! Gotcha. No monkey business lol ;)
As the old saying goes...be careful what you wish for! A frivolous one can harm others even as any decision/action/wish etc will generally have consequences!! Wisdom is needed that's for sure...Splendid review:)
I played Mrs. White in 9th grade drama class when we read The Monkey's Paw, because as the only girl in our class, I had to play the wife... Boys... I had a killer scream, which really impressed my English teacher, the ending always gives me heart-breaking chills, and yes, it's certainly as memorable as EAP's best works. A great review, Federico! 😊
