This was truly incredibly repetitive and painfully slow-paced. I’m serious, almost every page is the exact same, and I’m sure you could skip chapters upon chapters without any issue. So much so, I’d even argue there wasn’t much of a real plot to speak of here. Sure, the premise was really cool and the potential could have been off the charts, but the lack of anything ever really happening kept this from being anything of the sort.
There’s also little to no interaction outside of one single room and between four one-dimensional characters. It’s supposed to be a story about a prison, yet we never set foot outside of the infirmary where the main character works, thus it never actually felt like a story that took place in an actual prison. It could have been anywhere. Therefore, there’s never any real suspense or even sadness about the horrific conditions of the place since we simply don’t get to see it. It’s vaguely mentioned once or twice, but not really. You definitely don’t get to actually experience or feel it. It’s mostly just a whole lot of inner monologue, which got old and boring sooo quickly.
Also, I don’t know what everyone is on about when it comes to the ending being so rad and shocking, because I found the plottwists to be extremely predictable. It was about as cliche as it could possibly be, not to mention incredibly stupid since it leads to three very important (and unfortunate) things as a result:
1) It negates the entire, never-ending inner monologue we have sat through this entire book, since it’s clear the main character has been lying and withholding truth this entire time, but since we’re reading from inside her head, I guess she’s been constantly hiding the truth from… herself?? Is she mentally insane? Like, nothing even remotely logical could explain her inner monologue when you consider the truth. It makes no sense. Genuinely, no sense.
2) The reveal makes all of the main character’s emotions entirely invalid. We have been led to believe a lot of things to explain her situation and her feelings on matters, but it turns out it was all untrue, so her feelings and emotions during this entire book are now completely null and void.
3) The plottwist also changes her from someone we previously viewed as incredibly compassionate and selfless to someone I’d personally call heartless. We now know she could have done plenty to save many many people, including her father and her mother, but she simply chose not to. It changes our view of her entire character from someone who constantly tries her hardest to save as many people as she can because she cares deeply about everyone around her to someone not even willing to help the people she supposedly loves most with minimal effort. I mean, I’d dare say she is approaching psychopath territory with that: You have to have no compassion at all to just sit by and watch people (your parents included) die when you had the power to save them. Crazy.
So, those three things combined really just lead me to question what on earth I’ve spent all this time even reading? It seems I’ve literally just read the most mind-numbingly slow story, narrated by a girl who is lying to herself for no reason other than to give us, as readers, a gotcha moment. Which means I basically read… nothing. What a waste of time.
That said, I do have to admit that I had a little bit of a soft spot for Tipp. The stuttering, vibrant 11-year old really managed to pull on my heart strings once or twice as the boy was simply too precious. But really, he was my one highlight, and he was far from enough to save this book for me.

Yikes repetitive and slow? Not good. Sorry this one wasn’t great!

@Casey — I wish it could have merely been repetitive and slow, but the ending ensured it had to be stupid and nonsensical too🥲
Oml this sounds awful 😭 I don’t think I would be able to get through a book where every page felt like the exact same!! Hope your next read is a lot better 🥲💕
@Astra — yea it honestly did become so tiring and boring after a while, it nearly felt unbearable to continue, but i felt like i owed it to something to finish. I think it’s cus i genuinely did like the beginning of the book; the repetitiveness and slow-pacing wasn’t so noticable at that point, and the premise truly did show promise… so yea, i felt like i was really giving it a chance. But that backfired greatly🫠
Repetitiveness kills my interest I can feel myself zoning out. I hope your current read is better. Great review!🖤
When you mentioned a character lying in their inner monologues, I thought this was a mystery / thriller. 😅 Because I've read a m/t book with such a character and it didn't make sense to me at all. Sorry this was a miss for you, but I get it. Great review, though! 💗
I rated the book 3 ⭐️, but oh was it repetitive. Also I guessed the plot twist from the beginning. Can’t really understand the hype. Will you continue the series? Because I‘m still not quite sure and I read the first book in September
@Krystal — yea for real, it genuinely just numbs my brain🫣 it truly makes you feel there’s zero reason left to even continue reading cus it’s all the same anyway, which just makes u feel so apathetic😔
@Snjez — hahahah I wish! If it had been a mystery or thriller book, I could have at least somewhat understood the whole lying in their own pov thing (even though i would have hated it too) cus it could have maybe been explained through a trauma response or maybe cus they were secretly crazy or whatever. But in this case… well, in this case it was just stupid☹️ anywayy, thanks, lovely <33
@Lilli — Sorry it was disappointing for you too, love!😕 At least you still enjoyed it enough for three stars; that’s something🩷 to answer your question, though; no, i will not be continuing with the series. mostly because i have no faith in the author being able to write something that is not repetitive and slow-paced, but also simply because the last review ruined the whole main character for me so i have zero interest in the rest of her story or even in her finding a happy ending. The last reveal basically ensured i have no clue who this girl even is, and the little things i do know now are beyond unlikable🤧
@Hemmel — I don’t actually dnf books, haven’t done so in years, and the few times i did, i didn’t rate it since i don’t think it’s fair to rate books you haven’t even finished; your rating is hardly valid then, is it? but yea, not sure exactly why i didn’t feel the need to give this one star; i think it’s mostly because this simply was not the worst thing i’ve ever read. It could have certainly been worse, and at the beginning especially, i did enjoy myself. Before the repetitiveness kicked in, and before all the dumb reveals that ruined everything, i was actually having a good time. So yea, 1 star doesn’t feel fair then, even though the book as a whole was definitely bad
Sigh. Painfully reminds me of those "it was all a dream" type of endings, that invalidates the whole book and makes everything you just read a complete waste of time! Ugh! "The Infirmary Healer" more accurately titled, but I'm confident you'll get to see some of the prison in the sequel ;). Brutally honest review Imme <3
That’s such a bummer after all of the good stories you’ve had recently. Hope the next one is a little better.
I was looking forward to reading this book, but now that I know you found the pace slow, I don't know if it will be for me
that sounds rough 😭 but i swear all i've seen from this book is that the ending is apparently mind-boggling but i guess not...hope your next read is sm better imme !!
I feel like there are so many positives of this book it's crazy to see a less happy review. Thanks for being honest about your thoughts!
awh sorry this was a miss bb 🥲🤍 i did enjoy this one but i hope your next read is much better :) glad you liked trigg tho, he's a cutie!!
Thank you, this is the review I came here to write. I am perfectly ok with an unreliable narrator, but this goes beyond that and into territory that like you said, only makes sense with severe amnesia or having no empathy…both of which the book has zero evidence for. I am going to rage read book two only because it’s free on kindle unlimited and by the gods I want some kind of explanation for this
there’s a few things i want to clear out about ur thoughts, first of all we didn’t get to experience the prison because it follows kiva’s story where she was actually avoiding any interaction with any sort of the prison problem or getting into the dark side of it considering she has zero self defense training or anything in her story could lead her to the prison dark side , not to mention all the prisoners were too busy working all day in the prison the only ones who really was involved in the prison matter were the guards and obviously kiva not one of them aside to that kiva was the prison healer so automatically the story will take place in her infirmary dah, and the narrative that we was in kiva’s head why wouldn’t we know about her power is wrong ,to clear that out the book was third point of view story telling thats why when we read some of kiva’s thoughts it would be like “kiva felt afraid “ or “kiva didn’t know” it wouldn’t be “i felt afraid “ and so on and thats why we didn’t get to know about her actual thoughts and her power.
for the heartless part i understand the mom situation actually i thought the same like why wouldn’t she heal her and end the things, but maybe she was so terrified if someone notice the light or of the sorts,at the beginning my thoughts were like she didn’t want her mother to be harmed by the trails or smthing but she was constantly trying to heal her condition throughout the book so u have point in that.
and about her father i think it could be the the constant warnings of him not to use her power over him another reminder she was a kid.
and this is truly lovely YA story for any beginners want to start fantasy and i do love ur review just needed to add things + ur so beautiful
actually genuinely thank you for this review everyone talks about how good it is and im like....no!! i thought exactly what you did about the inner monologue...the ending made so sense since we had been reading her inner monologue the entire book. if the wasnt who she said she was the whole book, then everything about her in the book was essentially fake then...it genuinely does not make any sense
