Mundanely meaningful.

A 32 short story collection by RK Narayan, national dearest and one of the most successful Indian writers of all time.

This was a fine collection on the whole; with many Best (which are always supremely welcomed), a sizeable amount of Good, and one third of Meh, which isn’t bad, as long as it is not 1-star.

"Second Opinion" is not necessarily the best either, just a favorite of mine (since I could relate to it at a personal level) and found, generally speaking, to be one of the ones that most transmits about Indian norms and traditions. It’s also the longest, averaging 30p, when almost all others range from 5 to 12 pages. Still, every little story usually contains, in their own way, some different share and morsel about Indian culture and every-day life. And if I had to go into the essence of this collection, I’d say the motto that comes to mind is “Mundanely meaningful.” There’s an interesting introduction by Jhumpa Lahiri too, not that I really care, most times I just find her vibe “Mundanely depressing.”

Normally I’d review each and every single one of these stories individually, but since next to none were singly added to GR, I had to settle with my one-liner only, which I hope is enough to remind myself what the general story and point was about, in case I ever decide to come back here to check them out, someday.

Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

PERSONAL NOTE :
[1943] [264p] [Collection] [Partly Recommendable]
-----------------------------------------------

Mundanamente significativo.

Saranya ⋆☕︎ ˖ (hiatus) R.K. Narayan is boring:( But you might like him...
I'd say that the best Indian author out there is Ruskin Bond. You'll definitely fall in love with his works!

So far RK Narayan has been good Saranya! But I'm only 4/32 so I still have a long way to go, especially because I'm only doing like one short story a day lol. Thank you for the rec! I have a pair of Ruskin Bond so hopefully will get to them this year or next :)

Rosh Ooh, didn't expect to see this title popping up on my feed under your name, Feddie! RK Narayan isn't a favourite of mine, but he's definitely among the better Indian writers. I'm glad you found so many Best and Good stories in this book. I've read this long ago so I don't remember any of them right now. :D But "mundanely meaningful" sounds about right. I loved this charming "desi" review! ( ◜‿◝ ) ♡
Saw above that you have Ruskin Bond in your collection as well. I'm not a big fan of his, but I hope his writing clicks better with you!

message 16: by Esta (new)

Esta Ahhhh your one liner reviews are amazing! I don't even know what they mean because context but I love 'em! I almost need to read this so I know what you're talking about. Schrodingers envelope? LOL. Like Rosh said, it's great to see a good ratio of best and good stories in there. Exceptionally reviewed!

Not something I do often, mainly because of my unpredictable randomness, but ever since I read Shantaram I'm always craving for some good Indian lit <3. So far Narayan and Lahiri have been good, but I didn't exactly loved them. Ruskin Bond and Salman Rushdie are definitely next, and then I'll have to see what else follows lol. Thank you so much Roshie <3. Glad you enjoyed it too, even if not that memorable xD

Federico DN Esta wrote: "Ahhhh your one liner reviews are amazing! I don't even know what they mean because context but I love 'em! I almost need to read this so I know what you're talking about. Schrodingers envelope? LOL..."

I love trying to catch the essence of any book or short story with one-liner <3. I don't always succeed but I think I did good here lol. They do remind me today of what I read, but time will tell if that still persists in the future lol xD. Thank you so much Esta!

Ian That was a tremendous review Fede. I love your ability to summarise each story in a single line. Really impressive!

I've never read anything by Narayan, or Jhumpa Lahiri, or Ruskin Bond or Salman Rushdie for that matter. Clearly I need to delve more into Indian literature!

message 20: by Piyangie (new)

Piyangie Nice review, Federico. I haven't read this collection. Somehow, it had entered my mind that Narayan's stories are depressing.

And thanks for the good laugh over your reference to Jhumpa Lahiri. Is she mundanely depressing? :) I didn't like The Namesake but enjoyed Whereabouts.

Thank you Ian! I love it when I can get the essence right with just a few words <3, I think I may have a special penchant for summarization lol. All those are highly renowned Indian authors worth checking out I think. I bet you would enjoy them much more than I could; this kind of regional storytelling seems to be much more your jam rather than mine, Ian. Just LOVED Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts too btw ;).

Thank you Piyangie! Ah The Namesake was certainly my next one for Jhumpa Lahiri. I just MUST check her masterpiece, even if not exactly looking forward to it lol. Didn't know about Whereabouts but thank you for the recommendation! If Namesake works out fine I see a good chance of me attempting it, if not... doubtful; but still possible lol :p

Ifeanyi Omoike ‘Mundanely meaningful’—I really like that. It’s such a simple phrase, but it makes Malgudi Days sound surprisingly compelling. Definitely adding it to my list.

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp I find your description of these stories as “mundanely beautiful” to be quite a fitting and well-hitting word choice for these kind of stories as it makes me immediately understand what you mean! I love those kind of stories; they don’t always need to be too out there; mundane life can certainly be beautiful to read about, even more so, perhaps, when it is about a culture the reader is not intimately familiar with yet as it can be so informative and intriguing. Awesome review, Federico! x

Meh, even 2-stars are still ok, it's the 1-star that are bad xD. And 2/3 of good or better is not such a bad ratio for the mixed bag collection rule lol, all things considered :p. Thank you so much Diana :) !

Fiza Pathan A poignant & well put review of R.K.Narayan's 'Malgudi Days' Federico! I agree with you, the stories here are not too intricate or erudite, but they have this mundane quintessential South-Indian charm to them that touches the hearts of certain readers, mostly only Indian ones. I'm considered an expert on him in my country & my critical essays or study blog articles on his short & long works have been deemed as compulsory reading in more than 8 Universities of South India alone. But I admit, I could analyze his works easily because he is not that complicated a writer. Jhumpha Lahiri is mundanely depressing for me too these days, ever since my influenza! Loved your review. Love anything that reminds me about R.K.Narayan the Grand Old Man of Malgudi. Cheers to you! Missed you. :) <3
