Noir mystery at its finest!
This book had me on edge within the first few pages. This is one of those books that the less known about it, the better for the reader. So, I am not going to say much other than Dorothy B. Hughes wrote a masterful novel, with an incredible twist that had me stunned.
If you plan to read this book, don’t read reviews till after you are done. So many spoiled the twist, which is so annoying. This book is known for it, as you don’t see it coming.
Definitely read this one if you like the genre.

Excellent review, Antoinette! I am not typically drawn to "noir mystery" books, although there have been exceptions. I have so many in my queue at the moment, anyway. I'm glad that you loved it, though!
PS - I agree, it's SO annoying when reviewers give away plot points in their reviews. My #1 pet peeve!
Robin, I think you will enjoy this book- well written for sure. If you read it, go in blind. I did and am glad I did. They were discussing In a Lonely Place , another book by same author, on Backlisted - decided I needed to start with this one. But I watched the movie for In a Lonely Place with Bogart- very good, but I gather they changed enough of it- so I have to read the book.
I would hate to be a reviewer for a living, because my employer would expect me to give a synopsis of the book in my review. But that gives a significant portion of the book away to those who will be eventually reading it. It is annoying when reviews give away the whole thesis of the book (i.e., I am in total agreement with you). Why would I want to read it after reading the review?
Seems we are like minded on this one, Jim! I am so grateful that someone told me not to read any reviews or synopsis ahead of time- I would have been so mad.
Jen, let my be the only review you read if you decide to read this one:) There are spoilers on so many reviews it’s sad.
