Unique constraint
[edit]@Brya, Succu: There is a unique constraint on this property. However, there are 38 identifier which are not unique (Constraint violations/P961). Can those constraint violations be resolved or should we add them as exceptions? --Pasleim (talk) 20:17, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
- I would say they can be resolved (although these are not the easiest cases). - Brya (talk) 06:02, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- I agree. This will take a while. I can do nothing at the moment because the service at IPNI unavailable at the moment. --Succu (talk) 22:51, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Comments from IPNI software developer/maintainer
[edit]A Persistent Uniform Resource Locator (Q195305) to IPNI's TCS-RDF output takes the form http://ipni.org/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:82086-3. (I will add this information to the IPNI website in the next month or so.)
In about 200k cases, there is more than one identifier for the same citation in IPNI — IPNI was originally compiled from three different databases (see here), which have a long history (printed publications, card indices etc). Some of these are linked (unusual example), linking the rest is an ongoing task.
The digit after the hyphen in the identifier is always 1, 2 or 3.
A reconciliation service to IPNI names, which can be used with OpenRefine, is available at http://data1.kew.org/reconciliation/about/IpniName — again, a new version should be available in a month or so.

Multiple values for a name
[edit]Since many names in IPNI have more than one identifier, sometimes of the form N-1, N-2, etc., but not always (e.g. 144018-2 and 503872-1), and since the different entries for the name often contain slightly different information and are not always inter-linked, how can multiple values of the IPNI identifier be added to an item representing a taxon name, such as Lotus rubriflorus (Q6685302)?
