The complete 3-book set of one of my most favorites dystopian series of all times: ★★★★★ 1. Divergente. ★★★★☆ 2. Insurgente. ★★★★☆ 3. Allegiant. In a dystopian future, in a post-apocalyptic world, society has divided itself into five factions. Candor, who want nothing but the truth; Erudite, who hold intelligence above all; Amity, who love and desire peace; Dauntless, who value strength and life without fear; and Abnegation, who devote themselves to selfless altruism. Beatrice Prior is born under the care of altruist parents, but at the tender age of sixteen she’ll have to choose a faction to live with for the rest of her life. Her whole world has been Abnegation, but Dauntless also seems wild and full of life. And what about Erudition… Her faction orientation test gives her unsettling results, something dangerous that may even put her life in danger; but she still needs to choose a faction, and fast… before someone finds out. LOVED IT. I love dystopian fiction and love YA, and this one was a perfect combination of both. Add to that a slow burn romance and fast paced plot full of action. Bingo. YA heaven. Loved watching Tris blossom from a shy selfless to a daring dauntless, without ever losing sight of her origins. The chemistry with Four was amazing, and the pair just make dual madness. Christina was also great. Caleb can go suck and egg. Oh yes and Peter and Eric, how could I forget those two! Yeah… f*ck ‘em. Full RTC: Soon! Y no olvidar Erudición… Poe Completeness. The full bibliography of short stories by the immortal Edgar Allan Poe, mighty all-father of classical horror. After reading so ma Poe Completeness. The full bibliography of short stories by the immortal Edgar Allan Poe, mighty all-father of classical horror. After reading so many of his famed short stories on this and that collection, I decided to finally tick the whole thing and just get it over with. Oh the completionism! Some stories may sound very familiar, others will probably not, and for good reason; his lesser known stories are a fantastic mess and a f*cking chore to deal with, and hardly enjoyable at all, when not completely undecipherable, this especially when he often goes philosophical, religious, rambling or absurdly nonsensical. His “humorous” tales also felt remarkably boring. On the whole this wasn’t by any means an easy read, and in all fairness I must admit Poe’s classicness sometimes stings like a bitch. Some classics do age well, and dear Poe, as great as the man may have been, is sadly imo NOT one of those cases. His introductions tend to suck most of the time, and the more and more I read of him, the more I found myself frequently skimming to get to the point and try to make some sense of wth was going on; he tends to progress well, and he certainly excels at giving the killer blow, sort of speak. Clasicness aside, I can honestly vouch for Poe’s ever so popular stories; the unknown stuff though, which is plenty I may add, well, you have been warned. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Best : ★★★★★ “Berenice.” [4.5] ★★★★☆ “The Black Cat.” ★★★★☆ “The Oval Portrait.” ★★★★☆ "The Fall of the House of Usher." A free-domain collection with two long short stories by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, the famously renowned author of Carmilla. Meh. Ca Le Fanu Double Combo. A free-domain collection with two long short stories by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, the famously renowned author of Carmilla. Meh. Can't say I'm a fan of this collection, or Le Fanu for that matter. As any classical author, he tends to go tediously over-descriptive sometimes, which severely dampens my enjoyment. His stories are good though, I really appreciate the ideas and can't understate their value. It's just his style man! And my patience. Still looking forward to reading Carmilla; soon, very soon. ★★☆☆☆ Green Tea. [2.5] ★★☆☆☆ Mr. Justice Harbottle. It’s public domain. [2.5] ★★☆☆☆ Sr. Justice Harbottle. The Lucky Thirteen. An anthology with 13 of the best horror stories ever, written by many of the most renowned classical authors of all times. Again The Lucky Thirteen. An anthology with 13 of the best horror stories ever, written by many of the most renowned classical authors of all times. Again, I don’t know if they are the “best”, but they are all very good, nearly all of them, and if not read, they deserve at least to be known, for “famous” they are indeed, or should be, classic wise. I would like to note that, even if I didn’t enjoy some so much (for personal reasons), I think many of the “Good” could greatly appeal to others and rank among their “Best”, easily. For example, I can’t understate the literary value of The Call of Cthulhu, even if I hated Lovecraft’s style writing. The "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe are immensely remarkable on their own merit. And even "The Beckoning Fair One" by Oliver Onions is extremely memorable, even if it wasn’t my jam at all. In truth, the only one I don’t care about is “Green Tea” by Le Fanu. All others, given the correct circumstances, I feel I could recommend them, to the right reader. Every story here except for "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is free-domain, so the links for each of them can be found in the corresponding review below. So all the best, if you decide to risk it. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Best : ★★★★☆ “The Bottle Imp”, by Robert Louis Stevenson. [4.5] ★★★★☆ "The Lottery", by Shirley Jackson. [3.5] ★★★★☆ “The Monkey's Paw”, by W. W. Jacobs. [3.5] The Good : ★★★☆☆ "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. [3.5] ★★★☆☆ "The Tell-Tale Heart", by Edgar Allan Poe. [3.5] ★★★☆☆ “Dracula’s Guest”, by Bram Stoker. [3.5] ★★★☆☆ “The Great God Pan”, by Arthur Machen. ★★★☆☆ “The Country Of The Blind”, by H. G. Wells. ★★★☆☆ “The Willows”, by Algernon Blackwood. [2.5] ★★★☆☆ “The Call of Cthulhu”, by H. P. Lovecraft. [2.5] ★★★☆☆ “Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come To You, My Lad”, by M. R. James. [2.5] The Meh : ★★☆☆☆ "The Beckoning Fair One", by Oliver Onions. [2.5] ★★☆☆☆ “Green Tea”, by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. Dude is bleak. A collection of ten short stories by Ernest Hemingway, master of bleakness and stale storytelling. I have this feeling reading Heming Dude is bleak. A collection of ten short stories by Ernest Hemingway, master of bleakness and stale storytelling. I have this feeling reading Hemingway is like having a depressing, often chauvinistic, old grandpa smoking his pipe, retelling stories of his manly glory days, while at the same time scratching his ass and balls like it’s nothing. He may surprise you or make your eyes widen once in a while, but mainly he just angers you and weirds you out, and that is when he doesn’t just completely bores you out of your mind. His stories seem to be nearly always ridden with a frequently over-descriptive, insufferably ponderative prose, where virtually nothing happens at all, except through dialogs, and stuff. And if I had a machine to keep track of how many times it made me doze, I’d venture to guess it made me doze off around fifty times or more while reading this thing. Possibly a record. Nevertheless, I still want to read “The Old Man and the Sea”, because I’m stupid, you know? Anywho, if you enjoy Hemingway and his writings never mind anything I say here. Just add a plus two to each story and go wild, bet he’ll knock your socks off, one way or the other. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The "Good" : ★★★☆☆ "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." [2.5] ★★★☆☆ "The Killers." [2.5] ★★★☆☆ "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." [2.5] The Meh : ★★☆☆☆ "In Another Country." [2.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Fifty Grand." ★★☆☆☆ "A Day’s Wait." ★★☆☆☆ "Fathers and Sons." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio." ★☆☆☆☆ "A Way You’ll Never Be." [0.5] ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [1936] [144p] [Collection] [Not Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- ★★☆☆☆ The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories ???????? The Old Man and the Sea ----------------------------------------------- El tipo es sombrío. A Good Short Story Is Hard To Find. A collection of ten short stories by Flannery O'Connor, Queen of Southern Gothic and Christian low-jabs. I have A Good Short Story Is Hard To Find. A collection of ten short stories by Flannery O'Connor, Queen of Southern Gothic and Christian low-jabs. I have this feeling reading Flannery O'Connor is like reading a Christian version of Shirley Jackson, which isn’t bad really, just not my jam, sadly. One can only endure so many slaps to the face! This was my first encounter with the “Southern Gothic” genre, which can’t say I’m a fan of, and never knew before it existed. Of course, even if I didn’t found it so enjoyable that doesn’t mean it can’t be for others. I’m positive any Shirley Jackson fan would love these stories, since dear Flannery O'Connor seems to irk her readers the same way, sort of. Like Shirley, truly excels at the deeply, unsettling thing, honestly. All in all, I’m just glad I got to read ”The Displaced Person” and ”A Good Man Is Hard to Find", which are the two stories I hold most dear from this collection, and the only ones that I think will truly remain in my memory; the rest, although good, or ok, I could’ve lived without. Flannery O'Connor is just too damn religious sometimes, for my taste. Can’t say I look forward to reading more by this author, but chances are high that I will anyway, because of randomness, and stuff. Yet, hopefully, it’ll be someday far away. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Best : ★★★★☆ "The Displaced Person." [4.5] ★★★★☆ "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." [3.5] The Good : ★★★☆☆ "The River." ★★★☆☆ "A Stroke of Good Fortune." [2.5] The Meh : ★★☆☆☆ "Good Country People." [2.5] ★★☆☆☆ "A Circle in the Fire." ★★☆☆☆ "A Late Encounter with the Enemy." ★★☆☆☆ "A Temple of the Holy Ghost." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "The Artificial Nigger." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." [0.5] ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [1955] [252p] [Collection] [2.5] [Partly Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- Una Buena Historia Corta Es Difícil De Encontrar. SF Galore. An old anthology with 50 short science fiction tales, written by several of the most famous and not so famous Sci-Fi authors of the time, SF Galore. An old anthology with 50 short science fiction tales, written by several of the most famous and not so famous Sci-Fi authors of the time, circa 1950’s. To be honest most of these authors don’t ring a bell and totally escape my limited frame of knowledge for this genre, although pleased to find some remarkable figures I already knew, like Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Theodore Sturgeon and a few others more. Most of the rest I never heard before, but always happy to add a new name to my list of ‘done and sampled’. A somewhat outdated collection, easy to tell by the style of writing, themes treated and the general feeling of the stories, not to mention the publication date of course. Some, maybe many, of these stories didn’t age so well, but the grand majority were still reasonably enjoyable, on the whole. A mixed bag too, being half Meh and half Good or better; noting Meh is just ok, as long it’s not 1 or zero stars, which is crap. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. A 32 short story collection by RK Narayan, national dearest and one of the most successful Indian writers of all time. This was a fine collection on the whole; with many Best (which are always supremely welcomed), a sizeable amount of Good, and one third of Meh, which isn’t bad, as long as it is not 1-star. "Second Opinion" is not necessarily the best either, just a favorite of mine (since I could relate to it at a personal level) and found, generally speaking, to be one of the ones that most transmits about Indian norms and traditions. It’s also the longest, averaging 30p, when almost all others range from 5 to 12 pages. Still, every little story usually contains, in their own way, some different share and morsel about Indian culture and every-day life. And if I had to go into the essence of this collection, I’d say the motto that comes to mind is “Mundanely meaningful.” There’s an interesting introduction by Jhumpa Lahiri too, not that I really care, most times I just find her vibe “Mundanely depressing.” Normally I’d review each and every single one of these stories individually, but since next to none were singly added to GR, I had to settle with my one-liner only, which I hope is enough to remind myself what the general story and point was about, in case I ever decide to come back here to check them out, someday. A collection of 14 short stories by the argentine all-time legend Jorge Luis Borges. This mangled, torn-cover, decaying used book I bought at a laughable price, mainly compiles some of the most recognized stories found in Borges’ other best-seller collections, like ‘Fictions’, ‘The Aleph’ (and other stories) and ‘Dreamtigers’. Or so I suppose was the idea. As you may appreciate by the ratings my history with Borges has been plagued with duds, and this little book was no exception. He and I just don’t get along. The man’s intellect clearly works on different plane and I usually can’t follow, nor care to, after a while. But please, don’t be discouraged by my appalling ratings and, if you enjoy this author, just add a +2 and go nuts. Leave me alone. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. Él y yo simplemente no congeniamos. A collection of short stories by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, one of the greatest Spanish writers of the 19th century. This was a very nice collection, all things considered. Tbh I’m not a fan of Bécquer’s classical style of writing, but certainly can’t deny the value of some of his ideas, or the way he carries them to completion. Also surprised by a notable degree of versatility, in this collection mostly fiction, but sometimes also borderline horror, and even fairy taley, if nothing else. Or maybe this was just an excellent compilation nailed by the editor. Anywho, kudos to both. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. No Jackpot. A collection of 25 short stories by Shirley Jackson, the undisputed Queen of subtle uncomfortableness. After reading so many of Shirley No Jackpot. A collection of 25 short stories by Shirley Jackson, the undisputed Queen of subtle uncomfortableness. After reading so many of Shirley Jackson’s stories, I find her storytelling style somewhat similar to that of Robert Aickman’s, both true masters that excel at the unidentifiable horror of the strange tale, without a doubt. Having that said, I very much enjoy more Aickman’s style, since even though I can never “pinpoint” the horror, I can at least “understand” it. With Jackson, I can never really “see” the horror either, but 80% of the time I can’t even “grasp” it, usually involving having to read an explanation elsewhere to find the “hidden” meaning behind it, which is, as far as I am concerned, not good. She’s an uncanny master of the subtleness, granted, yet sadly, for me, too good for her own good. I mean, what’s the point of reading a story if you can’t even “hint” a meaning? Having to read with a wiki, a dictionary, or an encyclopedia on the side is hardly something to be considered in favor, at least in my regard. And ofc it may happen once in a while, nobody is a genius, but if it’s a constant every single time with the same author, then it’s a problem, right? And I don’t think because of the reader. After all, we are just reading fiction here, not quantum physics. So anywho, that’s my main beef with Shirley, which explains all the lousy ratings. Almost all the 2-stars felt actually like 1-star, but I rounded them “up” because after reading the explanation “elsewhere”, I found that I at least appreciated the ideas. Doesn’t mean I enjoyed any when I read them at the time though. All in all, I can say Shirley Jackson is definitely not my jam, at all, but if it is yours, then by all means just add a plus two to each rating and give this collection a go. On a side note, I also noticed a considerable overuse of children as a plot device to heighten her horror, which I find an effective, yet cheap trick when used too frequently. And looking back at this collection, I find that at least more than half of them involve children in a small or big degree. For whatever it’s worth. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Best : ★★★★☆ "The Lottery." [3.5] ★★★★☆ "The Renegade." [3.5] The Good : ★★★☆☆ "Flower Garden." [3.5] ★★★☆☆ "The Daemon Lover." ★★★☆☆ "Like Mother Used to Make." ★★★☆☆ "Charles." [2.5] ★★★☆☆ "The Witch." [2.5] The Meh : ★★☆☆☆ "The Dummy." ★★☆☆☆ "Trial by Combat." ★★☆☆☆ "After You, My Dear Alphonse." ★★☆☆☆ "The Intoxicated." ★★☆☆☆ "The Villager." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Afternoon in Linen." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Dorothy and My Grandmother and The Sailors." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Colloquy." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Elizabeth." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "The Tooth." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "My Life with R. H. Macy." [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ "Got A Letter from Jimmy." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "Men with Their Big Shoes." ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [1949] [302p] [Collection] [Not Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- ★★☆☆☆ The Lottery and Other Stories. ???????? Dark Tales. Positronic: A User's Manual. A collection of nine short stories by Isaac Asimov, one of the founding pillars of early science fiction. My first Asimo Positronic: A User's Manual. A collection of nine short stories by Isaac Asimov, one of the founding pillars of early science fiction. My first Asimov collection, and probably not the last, though can’t say I’m a fan. This is the first entry in the “Robot” series, which consists of several short story collections and novels, taking place in a timeline before his famous “Foundation” series. As a whole, I can say this collection had a great start with “Robbie”, but consistently declined as it advanced. It’s not that these stories are bad, it’s just they are in a way so similar to each other that they get increasingly tedious over time. With "Runaround", the epic 3 Laws are officially born, and thereafter a new random scenario with a minor tweak to the 3 Laws to create a different outcome/story. After a couple of them, the trick just gets thin very fast, and by the end leaving me an overall feeling that I just read a 9-part philosophical essay about the ethics in field application of Robotics Law. All said and done, I can say I’m especially fond of "Robbie." and "Liar!" The rest, I could’ve lived without. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. It stinks! A collection of twelve short stories by Sérgio Faraco. Each story around 6 pages, give or take. A small used book I only read because I g It stinks! A collection of twelve short stories by Sérgio Faraco. Each story around 6 pages, give or take. A small used book I only read because I got it at a ridiculously low price, though it's not like I think it was worth it either. When you have trouble understanding the first sentence of a book, you know you are going to have a problem. And so it was. From the first page I knew I was going to dislike this book terribly, and I wasn’t wrong. This type of gaucho/country literature really hits my nerves like a kick in the balls. I don't dislike the countryside, in fact, I frequently daydream of leaving the city and setting to live on an island or a forest. But this infatuation and culture of the strong gaucho, almost praising of male chauvinism, the whore women, or the incest with the underage cousin or a goat, the smell of dung as rose perfume, or the slaughter of animals as something beautiful; really grates me. Typical gaucho garbage that reminds me greatly of Martín Fierro, or the human misery of Vargas Llosa. Anyway, if you like all that then maybe this book may a ten for you. Whatever. I plan to return it to the used bookstore and, with pleasure, maybe someday I will forget about it. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Meh : ★★☆☆☆ “Pretty with bugs.” ★★☆☆☆ “There in the field." [1.5] (view spoiler)[ Joca (hide spoiler)] ★★☆☆☆ “Two jerks.” [1.5] (view spoiler)[ Anita (hide spoiler)] ★★☆☆☆ “The yellow monkey massacre.” [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ “The flight of the little egret.” [1.5] ★★☆☆☆ “In the fields of Urutaú mooing.” [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "Man." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “Brave seven.” [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ "Journey." [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “The voice of the heart.” ★☆☆☆☆ “Night of killing a man.” [0.5] ☆☆☆☆☆ “Goodbye to the little birds.” [image] ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [1992] [80p] [Collection] [1.5] [Not Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- ¡Apesta! [2.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “Hombre.” [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “Siete bravo.” [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “Travesía.” [1.5] ★☆☆☆☆ “La voz del corazón.” ★☆☆☆☆ “Noche de matar un hombre.” [0.5] ☆☆☆☆☆ “Adiós a los pajaritos.” [image] ----------------------------------------------- NOTA PERSONAL : [1992] [80p] [Colección] [1.5] [No Recomendable] ----------------------------------------------- ...more |

6 Masterpieces, 26 Middlepieces and 43 Mehpieces. An old anthology of so called “75 short masterpieces”, in my humble opinion more accurately titled 6 Masterpieces, 26 Middlepieces and 43 Mehpieces. An old anthology of so called “75 short masterpieces”, in my humble opinion more accurately titled as noted above. Like with most anthologies, I was pleasantly delighted to encounter some authors I had never sampled before and really wanted to, like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Forster and Hardy. New neat finds include: Walter De La Mare, Algren, Haycox and Gorky. Some inevitable acquaintances I already knew that always seem to make it to whatever collection I read, like Poe, Bradbury, Maupassant, Maugham, Chekhov, Greene, O. Henry, S. Jackson, Irving, Quiroga, Bierce and Hawthorne. And many many more authors too, for which I don’t particularly harbor any strong positive or negative feelings about. Except maybe Villiers de L'isle-Adam, who has almost always delivered me exclusively duds. Also a special mention for James Hanley and his “Butterfly” story, who vexed me so much as to inspire me to write my ”The Priest, the Boy and the Slug” in response, in mere five days, and finally initiated me in the authorship path. Thank you for that Hanley. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. The Best : ★★★★★ "The Three Hermits", by Leo Tolstoy.
